My windows 8 Toshiba Lap top screen Won"t come on. My lights , fan motor runs but my screen stays Black.

I have a Toshiba windows 8 lap top. I turned it off after being turned off for 5 months. It came on. Some lights came on and I can hear the Fan OR, motor sound. BUT, the touch screen WILL NOT come on. Please help. I still want to use this lap top. My Father gave it to me as a gift shortly before he passed away.. Please help. What can I do ?
