How to install/check on which version of Java updates on Windows 8 laptop pc?

First I got a notice from Java to update, then message that it hasn't been used for 6 mos. Sometimes the icon is missing from bottom navigation line, but I haven't deleted it.

I tried to check on which version of Java is installed on my pc: Control Panel >Java Control Panel, then directed to hp Help, but no information available there. Is there any other way to check on whether Java is installed & updated & available for use on the pc? Previously, messages indicated Java was required for many graphics on websites. Is this true currently?
