Re-install Windows

Hello all. I'm hoping you might have some suggestions for an issue I am having.

My old PC was built in 2013 so I have decided to upgrade it. I finished the new build last night which included a SSD NVMe boot drive.

Because it was a SSD boot drive, try as I may, my Windows 8.0 CD wouldn't recognize it and install. So, I went to my old computer which had my OS and created a boot USB. To create the boot image, I was told to go to microsoft's website and click the link that creates it. I think the image is actually Windows 10.

My new computer is up and running but it says that my legally purchased 8.0 key is invalid. :(

I want to decommission my old PC and move the OS to the new one and was hoping someone could help me with this issue. I didn't think I would need to purchase another copy of Windows OS in order to build my new computer. Are Windows 8.0 keys no longer valid for the free Windows 10 upgrade?

Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
