Windows 8 no tiles/black desktop with limited functionality

So I restarted my pc last night, when I logged on the tiles screen suddenly had no tiles and said there were no apps to search, I was basically stuck there. I had to go to the settings, click help and go to the microsoft help in order to get off the blank tiles screen. When I did my desktop finally appeared but the screen is black and the functionality is limited at best. For instance, I will try to open virtual dj but it says its an installation error. Also if I try to play a video or music file it will ask what program I want to open with. I select widows media player, it will them basically ask me to install it but will not allow me to do so. This happened once before and I went on the guest profile and it went back to my normal settings, this time it's not, please help if you can.
