Windows 8 frozen

Hello, having a nightmare of a time!

Running windows 8 on a Toshiba Satellite laptop. It performed some sort of automatic update and ever since it's completely frozen.

It starts up, I can enter my password and get onto the homescreen, but there are no icons. When I hover the mouse over the start button, I can't click it - it just shows the blue circle thing.

I've tried ctrl-alt-delete, clicked task manager but the task manager window never appears. I've tried mashing the f8 button on startup but nothing happens. I've also hard restarted the compuer about 10 times, but that doesn't do anything either.

Eventually, after about 5mins of loading, a message comes up saying "The tablet driver is not running". I've no idea what this means!

If anyone has any ideas, I would be massively grateful!
