Unable to indulge in a clean upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1. Suggest another way

My HP 2000 Notebook PC came installed with Windows 8. I dont recall any product key. BIOS is F.39-05/13/2014 (08891200003059100026101.... I have Kaspersky Antivirus installed. I keep getting service messages from HP to upgrade to Windows 8.1. When I run the upgrade after deactivating the anti-virus it shows processing but even after 7-8 hours nothing happens and I get no error message either. Im critically busy and unable to do a clean upgrade. Pls help me
