Can't upgrade to 8.1 from Windows 8

hi all,

thanks for taking the time to read this and help me find a solution. I've been trying to upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 with no luck. I just purchased an older laptop with Windows 8 installed and want to upgrade to 8.1, but the download link in the store says I need to perform updates first. However Windows update shows no available updates (my understanding is that Windows 8 is not supported at all).

I've searched with Google and all over the forums here but can't find an answer. How can I upgrade to 8.1? Thanks to anyone that can help.
