Is it safe to turn windows firewall off if you have Avast Internet security

I have a problem with my laptop (Windows 8) connecting to the internet and get an error message "DNS server not detected". I tried different browsers and it happens with all of them. Other devices work fine so it must be the laptop. I read somewhere to disable the windows firewall. I did that and everything seems to work fine now. So my question is, is it safe to leave windows firewall off? I have Avast Internet security. Is that enough? I've had both on for years and never had a problem before.
