Are the Files and Folders saved on desktop saved after installing another Windows?

I was recently running Windows 8 with Media Center. I decided to roll back to Windows 7 as my laptop was best suitable for it. I had some files and folders containing mostly documents and excel files, on the desktop. I forgot to copy them in any local disk. Can they be restored? Will they be copied to windows.old?

 

Please help!
