where can i find my Windows 8 product key

Hi, i have bought HP laptop few years back, which came with Windows 8. Last year i installed Ubuntu on windows. But now i like to install windows 8 back on the laptop i am using my bootable thumb drive to install windows 8. But, now it is asking me for the product key.

I understand that product key for windows 8 is embedded on the motherboard of the laptop and it should automatically pick it up. But, that is not happening.

Is there a way to recover the product key of windows 8 it came with the laptop.
