Can someone help me connect my windows 8 laptop connect to the internet?

I wanted to update my windows 8 laptop that I don't use anymore to windows 10 for me to use it for it's SD card slot, bit it's not letting me connect to the internet, and it's showing the ethernet sign where the wifi sign should be.
