Microsoft Update broken after upgrade from Vista Home Premium x86

Greetings Forum Folks,

 

I've just done an in-place online upgrade from Vista Home Premium SP1 x86 to Windows 8 Pro ($40...why not!?). The PC was having issues, so the steps I took are as follows:

 

 

1. Backed up user data ONLY (opted out of all of the settings since the PC was having issues) with WET
   
2. Did a factory restore
   
3. Uninstalled the 'crapware'
   
4. Installed Microsoft Security Essentials
   
5. Reloaded user data using WET
   
6. Re-installed MS Office 2007 Enterprise using compatibility mode
   
7. Tried to run Microsoft Update from within Microsoft Word...spin...spin...spin...spun...
   

 

 

It never completes...the progress bar just keeps rolling along forever. Same thing if I just start it from System and Security. Any ideas?
