In the upgrade to Win8Pro (clean installed) I moved around my hardware and ended up with a motherboard without a parallell port in the machine that shall have the printer. To resolve the issue I bought a VScom 011H UPCI board and after installing the Win7 drivers (no Win8 drivers exists) Windows found and installed the printer driver without any issues. The port for some odd reason showed up as LPT3 though. The printer works without flawlessly if selected from the print dialog but it doesn't show up anywhere else. Since it doesn't show up I can't make it the default printer, nor can I share it on my home network. The VScom board has no setting to change the port to LPT1 nor has the motherboard so I'm stuck. Is this a known issue? I mean, a setup where LPT1 & LPT2 are missing and the one and only port is LPT3 isn't exactly the first thing one test... Any workarounds? View the full article

This morning I found out that a S-1-5-21-2598375819- ... was the owner of some of my forldwers. I changed that. Also this morning I installed TuneUp Utilities 2013. This program made some changes and I read something related to being administrator and having an open door to anyone to get into my computer. This afternoon I continued changing the ownweship of some of my music folders. Suddenly, access was denied (error 0x80070005). I can't get into administrator account, nor to search or finder (msconfig). I tried to reverse it to a different date to see if it would solve itself, but I got nothing. I can't open TuneUp Utilities to try to undo whatever the program changed. Nor do I know it it was caused by a virus. In the Web I read some possible answers and tried to follow them, but it does not allow me. It keeps telling me that only the Administrator can open ... anything. What can I do before I "empty" the whole thing?. I can't get into any folder to remove or copy them and thus save the contents. I would much appreciate your advice. Thank you. View the thread

I know I have tried this question before, and tried every obvious answer that is suggested, you name it I have tried it. I have also looked on all the Moderators answers to other people, and none of them suggest anything I have not tried. I honestly believe the only people who could answer this is Microsoft, but they want you to pay for them to solve what is their fault. Can someone confirm I am right about Microsoft (the moneygrabbing bastards, is Bill Gates down to his last Billion) or can someone give me an answer that really will work. If you can I am sure you would be the answer to the prayers of all those hundreds of people with the same problem. View the thread

I was looking at an interesting Microsoft programming tool: TouchDevelop (see http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/touchdevelop/fe08ccec-a360-e011-81d2-78e7d1fa76f8) and wanted to download it to my Win 8 DesktopModern UI. 1. I could not locate the app in the Windows Store 2. When I clicked on the (free) download link (in the above URL) I got this: "You need to sign in with a Microsoft account on your phone before you can get apps from Windows Phone Store." Windows Phone Store? Never heard of it. I'm familiar with the Modern UI "Store". Question: How many Windows stores are there? (I hope there will not be a Windows "Surface" store! One store for all, please.) TIA, edm2 View the full article

okay, i had this coming... so i hid this useless update but after installing Media Center on my Windows 8 Pro KB976002 either installed with the WMC or after that (in which case my "hide" order got ignored) - either way, this is a messup on MS side, not user side however the bigger problem is that this bloody update cannot be uninstalled by any conventional means - in the windows updates section it does not have an uninstall option, the app does not have an uninstall option, executing wusa.exe /uninstall /kb:976002 gives me the finger saying update cannot be removed because IT IS REQUIRED (please make me laugh more) please tell me how can KB976002 be uninstalled (and no, i do not accept "it can't be" for an answer) - sadly i don't have a system restore date to get rid of this annoying little piece of ... thx, adam dancso View this thread

The reason why I am trying to avoid Paint as much as I can is because even it merely loads and saves in JPEG (without changes), there is actually increase in file size! In several instances, I took a screenshot using Snipping Tool and saved it as a JPEG. Another same screenshot was taken using Print Screen keyboard button and pasted to Paint, the saved JPEG file size is a lot bigger than the one saved using Snipping Tool. Why is it so? I am fearful of downloading extra software from the web to enable my MP4 files to work with Movie Maker. If it were a Microsoft fix, directly from Microsoft, I would download it, but just to download something from a place I am not familiar with is not acceptable. How can I make the hundreds I spent on Microsoft software useful for my needs in a manner that will not jeopardize my computer? Thank you very much. View this thread

I'm working with an internet friend on an issue with her Windows 8 password expiration. She has Windows 8 and is unable to set the password expiration so it doesn't ask to change the password so often. I have Windows 8 Pro and I am able to use a couple of different methods to get into the advance User properties and reset the password expiration duration to whatever I want. She is unable to get to these options and is given an error that her version of Windows 8 does not use that snap-in. This individual is 88 years old and dearly loves her Windows 8 and sings its praises to anyone who will listen. However, she lives by herself and is the only one who ever uses her computer. This is just an extremely annoying thing she would like to fix. Is she stuck with not being able to manage her password just because she doesn't have Windows 8 Pro? View the full article

All, I cannot connect to any Win8 PC in my network. The error I receive is here - I have enabled remote desktop in Windows 8. I have disabled the firewall. I have done a telnet host 3389 to verify it is listening. This is a domain administrator account that I'm using. However, for the purposes of testing I also added the account directly to the remote desktop users group on the Win8 PC. Still no luck. Anyone offer any insight? It failed to upgrade. I read the KB and found that upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit of Windows 7 is not allowed. But not sure whether the Product Key of the Windows 7 Home Premium is either 32-bit or 64-bit. May I know how to check? There is no keyword like x64 or 64-bit on the COA label. What I am sure is the Windows 7 Starter is SP1, while the Windows 7 Home Premium has no preloaded service pack. Is the information above is enough for anyone to help me out? What other ways can I try? (I only have the Windows 7 Starter DVD, the reason why I do not have the Windows 7 Home Premium DVD is that the PC was bought from HP that came without any Windows installation disc and the recovery discs which I had created were no longer readable by the optical drive.) i am using windows 8, and just got my computer a couple of weeks ago. no real issues at all outside of trying to navigate and learn the new windows 8 layout and paths for navigating, though that's all pretty well settled. i don't recall any real upgrades or updates. today my norton was alerting me to the need for a scan. i did it and all threats were resolved, and they were the small usual sorts. i turned on silent mode just in case. i downloaded windows movie maker as i could not locate it after trying and when i went to open it, the computer froze on a dimmed picture of my desktop wallpaper only for about three to five minutes then just came back with no opening of the software. same thing over again. so i deleted it and downloaded it again only to have the same issue. i tried downloading another piece of software thinking movie maker was no longer a part of windows, but the same thing happened. then i saw that it would take an update to install windows essentials, that apparently had it bundled. when i went to power down and restart thinking that might help i saw an option for update and restart. i did this and it's been well over two hours now with just the "working" circle going around and around (alienware). i'm not sure if there is a big update or what, but i've never had one take so long. should i keep going, force quit or something else? any suggestions from those more experienced than me would be welcome. thanks View the full article
