Installing Windows 98

L

Logs

I'm trying to reinstall windows 98 on my computer. I succesfully reinstalled
it, but it didn't have everything on it. I found the first disck to reinstall
and figured that was my problem. So I tried to redo it with this disc but now
my computer freezes when i try to install. It freezes when it gets to 100%
when saying it's getting ready for setup. I think its the security in the
BIOS but I don't know how to change it. Please Help!

When you say, "successfully reinstalled it," did you reformat or install
over the top without reformatting? Was it a Restore CD or a standard Windows
98 CD with the holographic logo and, probably, "For installation on new
machines only" or something very similar?

What do you mean, "it didn't have everything on it"? What were you missing?

Go into the BIOS setup and make sure that boot virus protection is disabled.
Be sure to save any changes when exiting. If this doesn't help or can't be
done, try running setup with "/ir" switch.

It only had 16 colors no speakers or sound and stuff like that. I know how to
get into BIOS but I don't know how to switch the boot virus protection. The
CD I found was a restore CD, and it gives the option of deleting and
installing or installing. The CD I originally had (the one that freezes) is
to install operating system on a computer without one. I'm really bad at
stuff like this so please help me with stuff I'l understand:)

Not all computers have boot virus protection, but if it exists, it should
be disabled during Windows setup. The instructions for using BIOS
setup sometimes appear at the bottom of the screen and often there is
no mouse support. If you find and disable the antivirus feature, be sure
to save the change when exiting BIOS setup. Also, a look at the end
of the "c:\setuplog.txt" might be helpful.

OK I tried relooking at the BIOS but I still didn't see anything under
security other than password and under boot I didn't understand anything in
there but none of it seemed like what I'm looking for. Another weird thing is
in BIOS it's purple and brown, when it used to be the normal colors. I also
tried c:\setuplog.txt but it said invalid command or whatever it says. I
really think the problem is with the BIOS but I just can't figure it out.

As I mentioned previously, not all computers have the antivirus feature.

Some BIOSes allow the user to change the display colors.

Start the computer with a Windows 98 boot floppy and type
"edit c:\setuplog.txt", then use the "Page Down" key to scroll down to
the bottom. Also, you might be able to bypass the antivirus problem
by starting setup with "/ir" switch.

OK thanks for the help. I was thinking that I would need a boot floppy, but
don't know much about them. Exactly where can I get one, and what type do I
need? I also don't really understand what you mean when you say type "edit
c:\setuplog.txt", then use the "Page Down" key to scroll down to the bottom.
Also, you might be able to bypass the antivirus problem
by starting setup with "/ir" switch. I'm really dumb with stuff like this
and don't know what you're talking about. If you could please tell me what to
do in step by step so that a mechanically challenged person can do it I'd
really appreciate it. Thank you sooo much fo the help you've given me so far.

You can get a Windows 98 boot floppy from
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

Start the computer with the boot floppy, select "Start without CD
support", type "edit c:\setuplog.txt", press "Enter", then use the
"Page Down" key to get to the end of the file. Windows setup
creates the file one line at a time, so the last entry is sometimes
useful when something goes wrong. Also, see if the file mentions
an anti virus check.

If you are using an ordinary Windows 98 CD, start the computer with the
boot floppy, select "Start with CD support", then insert the Windows 98
CD, type "setup /ir" and press "Enter". This sometimes bypasses the
problem caused by boot virus protection.

It looks to me you can't do it, then! You need a computer that can boot
to Windows & has a floppy drive to download & create a Startup Diskette
from Bootdisk.com, looks like. It might be worthwhile to spend the
$10.00, though, & take the "Bootable Utility CD With 68 Programs For
Both DOS And Windows". Does the computer with only a CD-ROM have the
ability to write to the CD-ROM-- or is read-only?

In the meantime... Can you boot to DOS on the machine that has the
problem? Hold Ctrl as you boot for the Startup Menu-- & select "Command
Prompt Only". If you can get there, try the EDIT of "C:\Setuplog.txt" as
previously instructed. I guess Myers wants you to spot an error message
at the bottom of that file.

Hi Logs,
I have a suggestion. Go to the library and download it on a computer that
has a floppy drive. There may be other places in your town that has a
computer with floppy drive that you can use. Ask around.

| You need to Google for "Hiren's Boot CD". It does just about
| everything.

I think I found the site...
http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd

...., & it looks like a bunch of good stuff-- but I don't see what to
click to download it or its cost!

| Hi Logs,
| I have a suggestion. Go to the library and download it on a

It's a good idea-- my only objection being he might run into a library
tough with a 12 pound book or a broom wielding witchy librarian wanting
her late fee money!

Hi PCR, that's funny!!
Seriously, most librarians are good people. If he does not have a
library handy, he should try to find a friend or other place to download it.
Just get a new floppy to do it on because the program will erase any item on
it. A new floppy is usually good. Some libraries sell them for about 75
cents. Some libraries insist on you buying the floppy there because they are
afraid that you will bring in a virus of some kind. Ours used to be like
that, I don't know if they still are. There are many places now with public
access. Universities and colleges have their own computer rooms with people
there that will help you. They are assessable to the public. Anyway, the
University here in my town does.
BTY, I signed up for a class this semester. It is a philosophy class at
the University. I enjoy the Philosophy classes very, very much.
