Hi MEB,
Update: The University Computer Room at the Library has both CD Drive
and Floppy Disk Drive. Probably other Computer Rooms at the University has
them too. The Free Library in this town also has them. I checked up on them
today.

Well that's nice to hear [and somewhat suprising]. Seems the ones around
here [public libraries] have removed them, except on *special computers*. As
for the Universities, most that I have frequented had floppies and/or CD
burners.. though the ability to *run* anything from either had generally
been disallowed [policy].

MEB,
They both, the University and the public library are using XP. When I
stopped at the University Computer room, the lady said that it will probably
be a LONG time until they upgrade to Vista because of the problems with it.
I know that the public library uses the Professional edition. I do not know
what edition that the University uses.

Hi Logs,
Why would you want a boot CD? As I remember, you said that the computer
you were having trouble with had a floppy drive. A floppy drive version may
be the only one that you can use to do that computer.
Ben Myers gave you the site to get a download of the floppy disk free.
This was on 8/29/07 at 7:04 AM. The site, so you do not need to look it up
was: http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm maybe they have a CD version there
at the same site. I have not tried to find out if they have a CD version. It
may download to a CD if you do not have a floppy drive.
I know that McAfee Version 10 will download to a CD if you do not have
a floppy drive. A while back, I suggested for you to go to a library or a
Kinko's to use their computer, to download to a floppy. You can try both
suggestions.

my computer that is having problems has a floppy drive and a disk drive. It's
just the one I'm using now doesn't have a floppy drive. So a boot CD would
work wouldn't it?

ONLY if your BIOS can be set to allow booting from the CDROM. And only if
the drive you refer to is a CDROM drive which supports Boot CDs.

Hi MEB and Logs,
Today I checked on the University Computer Room for public use. The
computers run XP Professional and they have both the CD drive and the Floppy
drive. I do not know if they have burn capabilities for the CD drive. I
called the Public library and they do not have the floppy drive, they have
CD drives but the girl said that she does not think that they have CD burn
capabilities. She was surprised to know that the University had computers
with Floppy disk drive. Both the University and the public library have the
ear phones. The girl at the Library suggested the flash drive. I do not
think that you could use the flash drive download to gain access the
disabled computer. I think that a boot floppy may the only way to go. Am I
right or wrong MEB?
Logs, you may have to find a friend with floppy drive capabilities to
download the boot disk. If you do not know any friends with a floppy drive
look for a University, College or company such as Kinko's with a floppy
drive to download the boot disk. Unless you can use MEB's suggestion below.
BTW, the girl at the library suggested upgrading to XP. What a terrible
suggestion! I do not think she knows too much about the specs of the
computer itself that you need to do it. She was not from the computer room
at the Library, just a receptionist.

Angel check the libraries locally and at the University and suggests using
them or a friend's computer to create a boot floppy. Good ideas.

If either can be done, then sure the boot floppy idea would work.
I'm not sure if Logs is able to navigate the BIOS to locate the *Boot from
CDROM* after looking again through this discussion.
Nor am I sure if either the boot floppy or the boot CD will take care of
the issues apparently occurring. This was an installation which apparently
failed at final write / pre OS boot.

The last query from Logs was for links to free boot CDs:

Bart's PE
any of the LIVE Linux CD virtual disks
http://www.bootdisk.com/ has boot CDs

Hi,
I was not satisfied with the receptionists answer at the library. Today
I went to the public library to check on it myself. She was almost
completely wrong. They have all 3 ways to download your information, floppy,
CD and flash drive. The only things that the receptionist had right is that
they had headsets and a flash drive.
It looks like the way to find out for sure is to check it out yourself
or talk to the reference dept. or the computer room people at your own
public library if you call the them.
When I get a computer, I make up a start up disk that has all the
information you need for that particular computer. I also re-do it
periodically, just in case something goes wrong with a floppy. It really
saves a real hassle when you need to use one.

Well, that is good advise, but not everyone does that, or can do that.

And there's always that time when the backup may fail for some reason.
Then there's my case, where I have nothing but test installations,, each
one different, so the best I can do is a CD burnt with the base installation
and programs, because the tests MAY be related to unofficial updates and the
like... though that may finally end at the end of this year [yeah, whooohoo]
....
