Ping: Alias... Ubuntu - Sell me

I

IAmTheOne

OK - Someone tell me, besides web browsing and Open Office, what can I do
with Ubuntu.? Since hearing this OS will be the death of microsoft, I am
ready to make the switch, just need to make sure It can accomplish what I
need.

1. run Microsoft Money or Quicken
2. Allow my children to sync their MP3's to their ipods
3. Run Advanced Video Editing software, such as Sony Vegas or Final Cut.
4. Run Advanced photo software such as Adobe PhotoShop, or PaintShop
5. Handle advanced DVD authoring (custom menus, transitions, intros etc...)
6. allow my kids to IM with the other 98% of the world on MSN
7. Sync my calendar contacts and to do list with My PocketPC and my Wife's
Palm Pilot
8. handle desktop publishing similar to PrintShop
9. connect and print to my 5 printers (3 HP, 1 Epson, 1 Cannon) ranging from
5 years old to 2 months old
10. network and share files drives and printers across all 4 computers in my
house and allow remote access while away.

this is pretty much our day-to day computer usage, I can do all this with XP
and Vista, so If I can do all this with Ubuntu too, sign me up.

No, unless you install vmplayer or similar vm. But there are Linux
replacements that might do what you need.

Yes and certainly more advanced.

Yes, with maybe the exception of the Canon as it's got a horrible record
supporting Linux. My particular Canon printer works (i850). Others
mentioned are very well supported.

Out of curiosity, do many games that run on XP or Vista run on this
Ubuntu? Ones that use OpenGL or DirectX? Thanks.

I would add that Gaim will not only support MSN Messenger but Yahoo,
AIM, Jabber, ICQ, Simple, IRC, QQ, GaduGadu, and GroupWise, all with the
same application.

I believe it will run quicken under WINE. I prefer to use Gnucash. Other
options are Kmymoney and MoneyDance - all of which will import quicken
data.

> 2. Allow my children to sync their MP3's to their ipods

I don't have and mp3 player, but according to what I've read this is a
trivial thing to do.

> 3. Run Advanced Video Editing software, such as Sony Vegas or Final Cut.

You could try to run those on WINE. I believe there are several industry
quality apps available. I'm informed several major studios use Linux to
produce motion pictures - I doubt your requirements would be any more
demanding.

> 4. Run Advanced photo software such as Adobe PhotoShop, or PaintShop

Again, I believe those will run on Linux using WINE. But GIMP or Cinepaint
should allow you to do the same things.

There are several IM apps for Linux.

That is a piece of cake.

> 8. handle desktop publishing similar to PrintShop

Scribus - or run it via WINE.

> 9. connect and print to my 5 printers (3 HP, 1 Epson, 1 Cannon) ranging from
> 5 years old to 2 months old

As long as there are no dumbed down 'winprinters' this should not be an
issue. I use an Epson Stylus Photo R320, a Brother HL1440 Laser and an HP
Apollo on Linux. You can see avasys.jp for full info on supported Epson
printers and scanners.

No problem. NFS or Samba - and CUPS. I've shared printers from MS to Linux
and from Linux to MS. BTW - you can also easily share scanners on Linux.

BTW - you'll also find a lot of BlueTooth hardware works quite well with
Linux that does not even have MS drivers yet - very nice article about
that in a recent Linux Pro magazine.

More lies. Everyone here knows that you can't run most software
developed for Windows on linux without an emulator or wine.
So who cares? It's not worth it.
