No, he and I are friends. Is that foreign to you? Maybe if you stop

Nothing like what your sick mind imagines. We are both happily married
to women.

So, how's life in Sweet Virgina? Gotta scrape the sh¡t right off your
shoes? I used to live in Arlington way back when. For all you know,
Frank, we've met.

Actually Frank, Gaim does in fact support every single one of the
protocols stated above. I personally use Gaim daily to talk to friends who
use MSN, AIM and Yahoo. =)

You aren't.

"WINE" stands for "Wine is not an emulator"

It doesn't emulate anything.

All it does is, it provides a linux compatible Win32 API that is required
by windows software to run. So all it essentially is, is a set of
libraries that the Windows software needs with a launcher that has the
ability to load a windows executable with its associated DLL dependencies
and then run it like any other process.

It is not like VMWare where you are actually running windows on a virtual
machine.

It can't run everything windows yet though from my experience it generally
does pretty good running standard windows apps. Games are a little more
complicated due to DirectX.

It's also on a roughly 2-3 week update cycle where a new update with new
features and fixes is released so if something doesn't work today, it may
work in the near future.

It's not a perfect solution, but it at least does help considerably in
making a switch when someone has a windows app or two they can't live
without.

Ultimately the best solution is of course just using native linux apps
instead.

Potentially under wine. Quicken actually may have native linux versions in
the future as they have just very recently released QuickBooks Enterprise
for linux.

Reference:

http://midmarket.eweek.com/article/...QuickBooks+Enterprise+Solutions/209518_1.aspx

So seeing how they've done this step, if it works out well for them, I
suspect more linux support may be in the future.

As far as Money is concerned, I think the "Microsoft" part of it says it
all as far as Linux support goes.

No problem.

Well seeing how Shrek 3 was produced under Linux I think there's plenty
out there for you in terms of Video editing. Unless of course your needs
are more demanding than those for Shrek 3? =)

Again, see #3 as they kind of go hand in hand.

gaim/pidgin

Though you will have to be content with 100% of the world. Sorry.

I can't comment on those two. Don't use either device.

Again, not something I have any experience in or have anything I could
refer to. Can't answer that.

HP Yes. Just plug it in and print. No drivers to install.
Epson Yes. Same as above.
Cannon *maybe* though I will honestly say that it's unlikely. Cannon's
Linux support is beyond pathetic.

I know several people running photoshop under WINE. And no, it is not 'a
slug'. Many folks report MS software running better under WINE than
natively on MS.

'most popular software' have Linux equivalents which are every bit as good.

I can think of a few reasons - security and durability would be two. Linux
does not crash and it is very very rarely susceptible to malware - and you
don't have to spend large quatities of time keeping it secure. I know, for
example, that before I retired, there was one full time IT person to keep
the MS systems up to date and running. I did the same for the Linux
systesm, but I did that as a collateral duty, which took about three hours
per month.

As I understand it, Intuit has recently announced a Linux port of
quickbooks. You'd have to check with them for details.

If you are really interested in getting answers, I suggest you try a Linux
newsgroup, and perhaps try it without a chip on your shoulder i.e. 'I can do all
this with XP and Vista . . .'

That is not strictly true.. a visit to some of the Linux equivalents
websites and you can see that they are careful to point out the differences
and that some features may be lost.. it is the decision of the end user to
determine if all is ok, and the best way to do this it to run two systems
side by side until such time as the changeover can be seen to provide ALL
that is required ..

I don't think that is what he's saying. What I think he's saying is
that using Gaim, you can exchange IM with all of those other clients
(i.e. you don't have to use the native client sware to do so).

Yeah but don't you see just how ridiculous that is? I'm sure no
production house with mechanical deadlines to meet is running linux with
an emulator or wine or whatever so they can run Adobe CS3.
That just makes no sense whatsoever. I'm sure running on any "enabler"
really slows things down.
Look, if linux is your thing that's great. I'm not in the linux ng
spreading FUD or bs lies.
I'm not saying you do that but we do have a small handful of linux
advocates and fanatics who troll this ng spreading FUD, lies and then
lying about the fact that they do! It also makes them sound very, very
desperate. Which we know they are.
They'll never get a break from me in this Vista ng!

Try selling Gaim to a kid who wants the same emoticons and features as in
WLMessenger so he/she can be like his/her friends.. while it is accepted
that there are equivalents (more or less), they may not fulfil all criteria
of the user..

This makes them neither good or bad, just plain unacceptable..

Honestly no Frank, I don't see what's ridiculous about me using gaim to
talk to my friends on other networks. It's a native linux application that
supports the protocols of quite a few instant messengers. It does not
require me to have Wine, or the windows clients of said messengers,
installed.

It essentially does the same thing that Trillian does under windows.

Which is great under either OS because it's so much more convenient using
*one* messenger client instead of having 3 different clients installed.

Beyond that though, I do agree that I personally avoid the use of Wine and
just go for native linux equivalents and keep Windows around for the few
things that it is useful for.

Good suggestion. Also, with financial software, they need to test not only
the software functions or equivalent if they choose a Linux app but, if they
do online banking or work with other online sites, investment sites, etc.
they should also test whether or not their financial institution(s) support
or will otherwise perform all necessary online functions the user requires.
