Don't use WET for Outlook data - it WILL corrupt the mail profile.

Importing an entire PST may well corrupt your profile and may create a ghost

PST that you can't close. Importing PST's will lose:

1. Custom Forms

2. Custom Views

3. Connections between contacts and activities

4. Received dates on mail

5. Birthdays and anniversaries in calendar

6. Journal connections

7. Distribution Lists



Opening a PST file will preserve all of these. That is why we do not advise

people to import a native file into Outlook.

Ask your friend what dates ALL of his emails are set to now. Then ask he

or she if he or she is happy with that.

Only the last modified date is changed when you import/export pst to pst.

Sent and received dates are not touched.



If you are moving from OE/Mail/Live mail and use Outlook's Import command,

then the received (and last mod) date is changed - use export from OE

instead.

A better recommendation for WLMail and Thunderbird has never been

written.

Outlook export to PST is the proper method unless you have your own

Exchange server.



Outlook 97, 2000, XP, all export just fine to a PST, and it can be

larger than 2GB, since it's an export, not a daily use file.



As for how to get it into Outlook 2007, it should be IMPORTED, as is the

standard for stand-alone migration.



Done this thousands of times, never had a problem.

Just yesterday I exported Outlook 97 data, the entire tree, and imported

it into Office 2007 and it worked perfectly.

If you were to have actually done this, as we can tell that Peter has

NOT done this, you would know that Export and Import work fine and

without corruption across the different versions of outlook.

Having done thousands of moves to different versions of outlook, I have

never experienced a "Profile" corruption in Outlook, never lost a

contact, email, task, or calendar item.

office email application.



What I though funny was that a customer was still using office 97 on a

computer, actively.... They are in for a rude surprise when they see

Office 2007's completely different menu's and massive waste of space in

the menu's.

FWIW, I've used the method described by Alias about 2-3 dozen times

over the past 10 years and recommend it. It makes no sense to me to

Export and Import when easier methods exist.

Note, my recommendation had to do with Outlook 2000 to 2007. Had the

case been that one was moving the same type of .pst file, I would do it

a different way.

Just curious Diane. Outlook 2000 to Outlook 2007 when files are saved importing the

OL 2000 saved files to OL 2007 will not corrupt and will work ?

Why ask, why not try it yourself instead of making comments that you've

not tested yourself Pete?



I have to do this all the time, even the export from Exchange, using the

utilities can be imported into O2007.



I just did Outlook 97 to Outlook 2007 yesterday.



If you didn't know this, why did you bother commenting like you were an

authority on it?
