Brand new computer with win7 ultimate. Been working fine for the past

few weeks till today. In the middle of the afternoon a message popped

up on the screen saying we may be running an invalid copy. This is

pure BS. Anyone else run into this problem?? Suggestions??

Go through the activations steps and enter the product key that should be on

a sticker on the computer (side if a desktop, bottom if a laptop).

Where did you obtain the computer, and is it a brand name or built by

a smaller system builder?

Yep, seen it happen about half-a-dozen times on my volume license based

Win 7 installations. The funny thing is that when I called to get it

validated the first couple times they phone validation (code provided by

a person) would not work either, about 2 hours later, the OS stopped

complaining and all was good again.

Do what I do. Never update, and turn off automatic updates. What

I find that Automatic updates are more help than harm and the issue

didn't impact production.

You might as well rename your OS to "Snow Ostrich!"

If your computer is NOT connected to anything and you don't install

anything,

You might get away with it...

The reason for the updates is to make you safer and make the OS better,

The only reason for NOT wanting to get the updates is if your copy is

ILLEGAL! The minute number of people who have a problem with an update

shouldn't deter you. If an update appears to degrade your system, you can

always

remove it.

What you don't know may hurt YOU!

Leaving your software in a swiss-cheese state by not updating *can*

hurt you.

My copy of Windows 7 came with my Dell computer, and unless Dell

is up to shenanigans, it is perfectly legal. But I don't trust

Microsoft. It's that simple.

My software works well enough -- as well as Windows ever works.

I've never contracted a virus on-line. I update my programs, I

just don't let Microsoft make the decisions as to what software I

should or should not have on my own machine. I don't let them

monitor my software, I don't let them change my software, and I

don't let them deactivate my software, for whatever reason they

might come up with.

If you don't trust Microsoft, you should switch to a different OS. How

can anyone who doesn't trust Microsoft run Windows??

I've had this happen twice.

I did a clean install back in October 2009 from a full copy of Home Premium

which I pre-ordered from one of Microsoft's nominated retailers.

It activated without any problem,

I installed Microsoft Security Essentials on the new system. This, I

believe, checks to ensure that Windows is Genuine. It passed that test.

However in February of this year I received a message telling me that my

copy may not be genuine. I seem to remember going on-line and validating my

copy on the Microsoft website.

A few weeks later a similar thing happened again, but this time with a

warning that Security Essentials would stop working in 30 days unless I

validated the system.

There was an invitation to go on-line to find a solution - which I did.

This involved downloading WindowsActivationUpdate.exe and running it to

check that my copy of Windows was genuine and had not been tampered with -

if I understand it correctly.

Windows passed the test, and everything seemed to be OK - but I felt a

little uneasy about it.

Fortunately, I made a disk image of the freshly installed system last year.

I restored the image in case some of the critical Windows system files had

become corrupted.

Everything has been fine since.

WRONG! It's if Micro$oft (actually their less than intelligent

software) THINKS it's illegal. That happens incorrectly much too

often.

BTW, as to updates Autopatcher (http://www.autopatcher.com/) works

with Windows 7. This is often a better solution for updates,

especially if you have more than one computer.

Regular backups allow you to COMPLETELY remove it.

So if you don't trust Microsoft, don't use their software. Get with Alias,

our resident Ubuntu Marketing Department and he will gladly help you set up

that SHITTY Ubuntu on your computer. Funny thing about Ubuntu. After a

couple of days using it, you will LOVE Microsoft again!!!

Um, you don't speak for me, slime ball, so if you're going to volunteer

someone, volunteer yourself. Oh, I forgot, you're too stupid to help

anyone set up Ubuntu.

Releasing software in a Swiss cheeze state is irresponsible.

Hey numbnuts. You have it all wrong. I am smart enough to realize that

Ubuntu is a big pile of dung that is completely worthless. Hell, they can't

even give Ubuntu away. Most don't want it. You are the Ubuntu Marketing

Department and they sure get what they pay for: YOU!!!

Why not take some Ubuntu CD's, I'd say about 10,000 of them and go to Africa

on a multi nation tour to spread the word about Ubuntu! Take as long as you

like! You are still an IDIOT.
