There you go, pussycat. Now you have to decide which one. I would give
the *requirements* a look, but I am sure both work with WinME.

Never heard of PC Security Shield.......Heather

I have no experience with PCSecurityShield, therefore, cannot comment good
or bad. However, I have had experience with both AVG and Avast!......both
are good. You will find them amongst the top rated freeware AV's. Do a
Google search for "AV freeware reviews" or something to that effect and you
will see AVG and Avast! right in there with the best of them.
http://www.techsupportalert.com/best_46_free_utilities.htm#2 This site
will point you to a bounty of good freeware.

I want to thank everyone for their input about AV software.
Your helpfulness has helped me much throughout the years with many problems.
I am grateful you are here.

this is the official "Me" NG, it contains the best folks on the web in any

come here often, even though my Me machine was given away long ago.

I'll just add my 2 pence, I do know that AVG works very well on WinME as
that is what my daughter uses on my old WinME machine. <g>

I seem to recall saying something like this in my first post..........
<If you have your old version, try reinstalling it in the Safe Mode, if
successful, you may want to install the new version over it (checking with
the CA site to make sure the new version is Me compatible, of course). Keep
us posted.
Heirloom, old and you might want to consider
Avast! or AVG, save some $$$>

Glad you got it figured out

Computer Associates AV build 8.4.0.24 works perfectly well when installed
on Win Me so it would appear that CA are telling porkies, something that
is not unusual nowadays when asking software houses about support for
older operating systems such as Win Me. It is easier for them to say that
they don't support the use of their product on Win Me regardless of
whether it works or not rather than to spend time on providing support.
CA today is focussing its product support on Vista and they are unlikely
to express interest in any products older than XP SP2.

I only wanted you folks to read what they sent me just so you could see for
yourself how the good people (LOL) at CA replied to my problem.

I'm going to use another AV software anyway like Heirloom first suggested.

Mike, I believed you when you posted it worked on your 'puters. I didn't
doubt you at all. If CA doesn't want my money to renew my license, #%&* 'em!

Peace!

Something I omitted to mention. Take HP, they have now withdrawn most if
not all Win 9x & Win Me drives for their products from their site. This
doesn't mean the product doesn't now work with Win Me if it did before but
instead that HP are no longer going to provide support. A bit like
Microsoft who stopped providing support for Win Me and Win 98SE in July
2006.

I gave up paying CA when they introduced the one year free trial some time
ago. Since then Ozzie Laden (from Afghanistan), Harvey Pingu (from the
south pole) and John Doe Jr (from the USA) amongst many others have
enjoyed free use of CA AV software on my PCs. CA dropped back to a three
month trial earlier this year but again that isn't a problem either as I'm
now using Avast on most of my PCs. Note that I run more than one OS on
most PCs so need multiple copies of for example AV software.

Good of you to let us know, SGB.
It helped to shed more light on this subject.
Also glad to discover Mike's favor for Avast, it is indeed an effective
program.
Keep on 'clicking' with 'ME'.

I've been using Avast for some time, 2 or more years, initially on an
AMD64 x2 system running both XP x64 and XP x86 but also now on other
systems including my laptop (XP Home SP2 and Vista). There are some bits
about the free version I don't particularly like but I've experienced no
problems to date and prefer it over AVG although to be honest I haven't
looked at AVG recently.

Quite some time ago (2+ years) I used AVG and encountered severe problems,
but that could have been my own fault. Several people here witnessed no
problems with AVG and ME and were happy with that marriage.
