I would say the current one but we would be talking about different
things....

That still doesn't give a good reason for not coming together as a country
and celebrating what happened over 200 years ago... What is going on today
does not change what happened in 1776.

I won't say President Clinton was poor but he was by no means a wealthy man
when he became president having come from a family of modest means and
spending most of his adult life working in the public sector or as an
elected official. President Reagan was not a particularly wealthy man,
neither was Richard Nixon or President Eisenhower. The problem is not so
much the wealth of the individual rather it is the amount of money it costs
to run for office and the requirement of attracting wealthy contributors.
The Internet, with all its faults, may start to change that. Even so, your
point should be directed at the obscene amounts of money it costs to run for
office in this country, not to mention its corrupting influence as opposed
to which individual is rich or poor.

The dollar is not at an all time low. Apparently, you didn't live through
the 1070s when interest rates hit a high of 21%, inflation was running at
over 10% and unemployment was in the 7% range or more.

I Agree with most other things you said with regard to problems in this
country with the following caveat. In this country, I can speak up about
these problems. When I'm ruminating over some of the problems we have here,
some of which you enumerated, I think of Hugo Chavez shutting down a
television station because he didn't like what it was saying.

I think of the countless countries around the world where not only would
such things as you mentioned not be reported, they could not even be spoken
or discussed. I don't like these things you mentioned, including and
perhaps most importantly, the voting irregularities but even though I was
not able to vote the administration responsible out of office, I had the
constitutional assurance, that ultimately, that too would change.

The wheels of change grind very slow here but we do still have the power to
change things. Some of the problems are institutional as you suggest but
when the masses become energized in this country, we have a remarkable
capacity to make things happen and that includes change.

IOW, who you know. You need to be rich or sell out to the highest bidder
like a common streetwalker. I stand corrected.

I was in Mexico then (late '70's and the dollar was strong there. I

Because it's worse elsewhere doesn't make a Patriot Act The Constitution.

Because it's worse elsewhere doesn't make Operation Iraq Fiasco the

When I can't see the Daily Show on line, you're right, needing to worry
would be confirmed. It just seems to be, unfortunately, heading that way
already. I hope I'm wrong because I don't place much hope in China
leading the way in the 21st century.

The peso is not a benchmark currency. In the 1970s, the dollar, yen, Deutch
Mark and British pound sterling were and the dollar fell to all time lows
against each of them.

I didn't say that either, only that I'm thankful for a free press that is
able to and does report such abuses so I/we in this country don't live in
blissful ignorance unless we choose to do so. And I'm thankful I can speak
out and openly criticize the government without fear of being arrested for
it....though given the "Patriot Act," sometimes I wonder.

I would have to say their wealth at the time they ran was higher than the
average american though.
But I would agree about the corruption created by the donation to the
system.

Did you vote in the last presidential election?

Re: OT Happy Birthday America, July 4th, 1776-2007 !!!

Maybe you don't realize what the 4th of july is really about? It is about
celebrating what George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and
what all of the other people over 230 year ago did to create our nation. It
has nothing to do with health insurance, george bush, iraq or anything going
on today.

Are you saying they should never have created the united states to begin
with???

While we're at it, we have a sort of a cowboy song we'd like to do
for ya. This is a song that deals with the rapidly approaching 200th
birthday of the united states of america, ladies and gentlemen. This
is a song that warns you in advance, that next year, everybody is
gonna try and sell you things that maybe you shouldn't ought to buy,
and not only that, they've been planning it for years. The name of
this song is (pardon me), Poofters Froth, Wyoming, Plans Ahead.

Poofters Froth, Wyoming,
March Eleven Sixty-Seven
Take a letter, Miss Abetter
as our pigeons will be homin'.

To our jobbers in Dakota
And to Merwyn, Minnesota
This is merely just a note about
Performance to our quota

Well, we've all come out to show dem,
And the Elks have helped us
Load 'em
Little packets full of jackets
Little rackets, little rackets

Little Poofter-Cloth Appointments
Little Pofter's Froth Anointments
Little hoods, little goods
Little doo-dads from the woods

The entire stock is shipping
Oh our shod is hardly slipping
To the markets of the world
Our wrinkled pennants are unfurled!

T-shirt racks, rubber snacks,
Poster rolls with matching tacks
Yes, a special beer for sports
(and aper cups that hold two quarts)

Everything a nation needs
For making hoopla while it feeds
The trash compactos, small reactors,
Mowers, blowers, throwers & the glowers:

This is Buy-Cent-Any-All Salute(HYULK!)
Two hundred years have gone ka-poot!
Ah but we have been astute!
Signed: Anon. - Wyo. Galoot

Not really a fair comparison at least insofar as this discussion is
concerned. First, during the Great Depression, currencies globally
plummeted so the dollar was in line with global currency devaluation.
Second, the cost of goods fell enormously as well. If you had money during
the depression, cost of living was relatively low.

That's a battle that's gone on for years but again, not a completely apples
for apples comparison as PBS is not private, for profit entity and while it
runs commercials, it is not a commercial enterprise. If it could continue
to acquire funding through subscription and sponsorship, it could continue
to broadcast. In other words, this is a funding argument versus Hugo Chavez
essentially pulling the license or otherwise taking away its right to
broadcast regardless of funding.

Given what I've seen the Supreme Court do in the last couple of months, I'm
not too enamored with the idea of another revolution. We are so
ideologically divided and filled with such partisanship I can only imagine
how they might shred the constitution. I'd rather continue working within
this framework, flawed though it may be.

Good, I thought otherwise.
You have maintained your griping rights.
I tend to ignore those that shirk that responsibility since they
choose to do nothing when there is a chance to do something.

My wife votes in the Spanish elections. My child votes in both the
Spanish and American elections.

Whilst I understand the reasoning one could argue that if no candidate
satisfies one's wishes then voting for any would be wrong.

Freedom is about choice and compulsory voting could (And would) simply
be used by the richest party to ensure their permanent re election.
Having policies that encourage people to turn out and vote is the
important requirement, and we see evidence all the time that none of the
candidates really has much to offer.
