A new 'Beta' test from Panda

F

---Fitz---

I have not a clue why you can't see my IP address. It would depend on your
newsgroup client and how it's configured, whether proxies are being used by
the sender, how the sender's ISP is set up as well as a host of other
things...probably including firewalls, routers and other things. I'm doing
nothing special to conceal my IP and I wouldn't know how to do it nor would
I care. I'm on Time Warner cable, behind a Vonage router and behind a
Belkin router. My IP is dynamic which means it changes on occasion. I'm
not on dialup or my IP would change every time I dialed in.

At any rate, your question is not virus related so it's probably better
suited to a newsgroup concerning security rather than virus.

Thanks for responding again, Fitz.

If I right-click on a post in any newsgroup or email message, I see a pop-up
menu at the bottom of which is 'Properties'. If I left-click on 'Properties'
I get a pop-up window showing General and Details. If I click on Details
there is loads of information. If you do this on a message from me you will
see, 3 lines up from the bottom the following: NNTP-Posting-Host:
AC8FC59C.ipt.aol.com 172.143.197.156 - That is my me! When I carry out the
same exercise on a message from you, I *cannot* identify you. Your
explanation may be valid - but I've never come across this before.

I had no idea about any of this a couple of years ago. I'd never even
considered why anyone would even wish to identify someone who might make a
post in a newsgroup, Microsoft or any other. Now somewhat wiser, I believe
that there are 'facilities' which can scan IP addresses and identify
vulnerable/unprotected PC's (but have no idea how they work!). Scouring the
Microsoft newsgroups may well be how the 'bad guys' find new additions for
their Botnets - and thus be able to spread spyware and viruses undetected.
Perhaps that answers your last point!

Another poster here has no Reverse DNS evident from his IP address. Whilst I
am willing to be shown that my understanding of matters is incorrect, no-one
has offered an explanation yet. I fear that, if one is unprotected, these
newsgroups pose a real threat to many Internet users. Just my view! :)

The truth will out!

I would have/would still appreciate replies to my queries here Peter Foldes!
You did ask me a question!

Just so I have my record absolutely straight (and so that I may be confident
that I should concentrate my effort to seek out the 'bad guys' elsewhere) I
should be most grateful if you, Peter Foldes, would confirm here, for all to
see, that you:-

A. Have never posted advice on the Annexcafe User2User newsgroups (one in
the USA and the other in the UK) and

B. Have never posted anywhere using a different posting 'name' -
especially that of Derek Feldman.

If you are a good and honest person, I can determine no reason why you will
not respond to these simple queries. I understand that you are a foreign
national living now in Canada. I'd just like to be certain that your
'business' is unconnected with helping worldwide terrorism and/or enabling
fraudulent crime on the Internet. That is my sole purpose.

I look forward to your response.

If you do /not/ respond, perhaps others here will also start to question
your integrity!

Hello David

This will be the last time I will involve myself with this delusional query
of yours. I was born as Peter Foldes and I stay as such and post as such
across the newsgroups. If you have any doubts about this person on another
newsgroup server who is named Derek Feldman then may I suggest that you go
and ask this person there why his name is Derek and why is he\she\is posting
using his\her name as Derek Feldman.

I have nothing to do with this person and I do not wish to either. Also I do
not know who she\he is.
As far as not trusting me for the answers that I post to you on your issues
, then that is your prerogative and either you take it or you do not.

This is the last time I will involve myself with you on this name changing
subject which you keep on bringing up and waiting bandwidth here for no
reason..

Now, may I ask you , did you solve your issues as far as what you have
posted concerning your computer.

Thanks David and have a nice day and weekend

David,
that is an old message, but you probably got my attention for the last time.
Should have really ignored it.
I can't be 'bothered' with you any more, nor can my team of 'good guys'.
'Them' that I gave the group to, can't be bothered either and wanted the
group deleted, fed up with patiently explaining to you and for you keep
maligning good people.
Nothing less than an apology from you, which can be made public, will be
considered.

None of this has anything to do with security or virus.

BoaterDave

Action Plan!

Hello Dave

Taking your last sentence of your post first, you said in your message here
on 29 July at 1849 - "You are the intruder/virus/Trojan, with your
"Crusading", attacking good people". I therefore consider that there *is* a
place for me here! <g>

I will willingly make a public apology if necessary, but I cannot do so
until I have been told exactly what it is for which you wish me to
apologise. Perhaps you could start by explaining how *you* can tell the good
guys from the bad here on the Internet, especially those posting in
newsgroups. Then, perhaps, tell me which good guys I have maligned and, of
course, exactly how you *know* that they are good guys. Are you *absolutely*
sure - or just pre-supposing?

Should you prefer to take the subject matter of my quest (to identify the
bad guys) away from the public gaze here, and you are in no way affiliated
with Cybercrime and malware propergation, perhaps you will re-open a
'boater.dave' group on your server which is NOT moderated by anyone at all.
Debate and discussion could then continue in private. Some folk from /this/
group might even come over and join in any discussion which transpires,
especially when I advertise any such new group here on the Microsoft groups.

The ball is in your court.

David

Re: Action Plan!

for myself only....
i lost my Mom in early 2006. she was an active member and owner of
support.cancer on Annexcafe. she slapped me all the time.

your comment, that she should have slapped me harder was uncalled for and
downright rude.
you are not a nice man, BD. not at all. in fact, you are cruel.

i lost my Dad in late 2006, do you have some comments about him, as well?

you want your own group? go to Usenet and search around for someone to give
you an alt.boater.dave group.
search your Usenet group list for admin.

you will not get one on either AnnexCafe nor DogAgent.
those are my homes away from home. you are not welcome in either of my
homes.

David

After suffering through reading this thread I cannot help but to say how
astounded I am. BoaterDave You need to be ashamed.

I do not know if this newsgroup is moderated, so I take it upon myself to
say, "Your harassment is not wanted here". You are a nuisance. Contribute
to the community or Go Away. Do not clog up the newsgroup with your
conspiracy theories. Do not attack the creditability of the other members.
Do not hijack other people's topics to continue this personal vendetta you
have against Peter Foldes.

The choice is yours. Should you choose to stay I would expect you to
apologise at least to Peter Foldes for the libelous things you have said.
Otherwise go back to AUMHA or wherever it is you belong.

To help you distuinguish between the 'good guys' and the 'bad guys' on the
internet here is some advice. Look in the mirror, think about what you have
written here over the past fortnight, and ask yourself, "Am I one of the
'good guys'?" The 'good guys' contribute to the internet, making it a better
place. The 'bad guys' exploit it for their own personal gain. So which one
are you? [rhetorical]

Do not ask for a further response from me. I do not normally respond to
trolls except for in this extreme circumstance, the worst internet manner I
have ever seen.

Calling on a Guru to explain if I'm mistaken!

Well - another concern for me here - IP address of this poster.

I'm willing to learn if I really have misunderstood matters, but I'm fairly
certain that all *genuine* IP's /should/ have a PTR record.

Help and advice welcomed. TIA.

RE: Calling on a Guru to explain if I'm mistaken!

You do not get my IP address because I do not use an email client to post in
the newsgroup, I post through my web browser.

If you enter that IP address into a google search, you would see from the
results it is the IP address of the Microsoft Public Newsgroups.

Enlighten yourself. Follow this link to the Microsoft Public Forums, then
you too will not show your IP address when you post through your web browser.
http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...b85-5bde-4e6f-b9f4-c199b934c707&lang=en&cr=US

You are now aware of dynamic IP addresses. You are aware that the IP is
changed when posting through a web browser. Now will you please call of the
assault. I do not believe anyone appreciates your suspicious accusations.

In reply to your original post regarding http://www.nanoscan.com/, I would
never use any online virus scanner unless it was first recommended to me by
many well known and trusted software review sites. In fact, I would never
use any antivirus at all, I view antivirus software as more of a hassle than
they are worth. If I get a virus I will delete my hard drive and reinstall
windows. I do not care if a hacker steals my information, I have nothing of
value to steal.

The End.

Re: Calling on a Guru to explain if I'm mistaken!

Well - I'm so sorry Mr Slartybartfast. Do you know, the link you so kindly
provided took me right back to the place where I started my enquiries more
than 18 months ago! At that time I actually used my real email address until
I was advised not to do so. My take is that the posters there (and here) are
highly vulnerable and easy prey for some.

If you are going to criticise me, please make sure you are 100% correct
yourself.
You said ...... "Now will you please call of the assault". I belive you
meant 'call *off'* .......... '

How's this for a suitable recommendation?
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=28091

Your approach is, if nothing else, quite novel! <g>

A question. If you get a virus or similar on a partitioned hard disk (to
give you, say, a C: and a D: drive) if you wipe C: and re-install windows
there, are you sure that any malware on D: cannot re-emerge and infect the
C: drive once again (perhaps without your knowledge)?

Similarly, if you take a 'snapshot' of your PC, with Norton Ghost for
example, would not any virus/malware be captured too? (and then
re-introduced)

Always wondering! <g>

Re: Action Plan!

Hi Li

So sorry to hear about the loss of your parents.

Perhaps you will explain, though, why you have come here to harrass me.

My understanding is that Dave H. runs the server(s) at Dogagent.com. Surely
he is not beholden to you. Perhaps you are responding on Dave's behalf - are
you? Can he not fend for himself? I didn't ask for a newsgroup of my own,
neither do I want one. It was provided simply so that you might try to
malign and bait me, a skill which you have obviously developed over many
years. Perhaps, even, to incapacitate my PC as was done last year.

I have been called many things, Li - but cruel is one I cannot recall having
been attributed to me. I love people and animals and do my very best to help
others every day. I sleep peacefully in my bed each night, knowing that 'the
bad guys' will, eventually, be caught. How well do you sleep, Li?

Mr should have a period after it (as in Mr.). Criticise is misspelled (criticize is correct). Belive is misspelled (believe is correct). (and then re-introduced) should be before the ? mark.

What makes you think you're qualified to correct other peoples grammar and spelling with mistakes like these? You appear to be as good at that as you are at identifying the good guys from the bad guys.

BD
For your edification -
Criticise is correctly 'spelt' :) as in proper English English, as is
'caponise' which, no doubt, many would like to see happen to the pair of
you.
Why cannot you both go peddle your pedantry in a chat room?

Your large vocabulary is impressive, antioch. I hope it serves you well as BD drives the knowledgeable people from the group with his forthcoming non-stop questioning of every piece of advice posted and his claims that people are not what they seem to be simply because they will not divulge personal information about themselves. I'm done responding to him. Not because of your comments, but because he simply isn't worth it.

I'll try to answer. I believe that these MS newsgroups (hundreds of them)
are used as a source for finding some of the most vulnerable of Internet
users.

When I have established that Peter Foldes is *not* involved in malicious
practices, then I'll go from here. I cannot prevent others posting.

It would also help is folk answered my questions!

Re: Calling on a Guru to explain if I'm mistaken!

Yes, creating an image of a hard drive which has malware would include the
malware in the image. When copying this image back to the hard drive, the
malware would also be copied back resulting in net gain of zero. When I
reinstall Windows, I reinstall off the original DVD which has no malware,
unless you call Windows itself malware :)

If the malware is on drive D:\ then it possibly could be reactivated on to
drive C:\. You normally need to access the files on D:\ to reactivate the
malware.

No antivirus is perfect either, antivirus programs can often miss finding
some malware. I tend to find antivirus programs clunky and annoying and
prefer not to use them.

On my D:\ I compress my files individually which makes it hard for malware
to emerge. I also back up my D:\ drive onto DVD's, sometimes malware also
finds its way onto these backups but not often. Then I wipe D:\ and C:\
using killdisk before installing Windows again. It is a painful process and
takes a few hours so I do not do this very often. I do find this much
easier than trying to live with an antivirus program installed. My choice is
not for everyone, as I said before I have no valuable information stored on
my PC, I do not own a credit card and do not use internet banking. If I have
malware then I can live with it.

The AUMHA forum you linked to as a recommendation for Nanoscan and Totalscan
does nothing for me, it is hardly a review. Panda Software is well known, so
this is not one of the fake virus scans which is on the web. Out of
curiosity I started to run it anyway, I did not continue since I do not yet
fully understand the software and am not prepared to install the files on my
PC. You may use this if you wish but it is not for me.

For the record, criticising spelling and punctuation is only argumentative,
it achieves nothing other than to take the discussion off the topic.
Criticise(UK) and Criticize(US) is the same word. I misspelled off[of] and
am sorry, you still understand the meaning so it's no big deal.

I am not liking posting in this topic. It is a haven for trolls, which
maybe I am one also. I gave you my opinion of the software and also of my
antivirus usage, there is nothing left for me to say. I do hope you give up
on your conspiracy theory soon, when I look at the posts of Peter Foldes I
find them to be all helpful, for me at least this is enough reason to
consider him as a good person.

The bots which harvest email addresses off the internet are just that, bots.
They scour the entire internet, not just microsoft newsgroups. To be safe,

Re: Calling on a Guru to explain if I'm mistaken!

Thank you for your oft amusing and helpful post. In turn, I apologise for
nit-picking spelling errors, but I was unsure of your credibility with a
user name such as yours! :) I have become quite adept at re-installing
Windows over the last 18 months and, like you, have nothing of value on this
PC. I've tried lots of different anti-virus programmes, on-line scanners and
security suites and do now better understand the dreadful problem of
'malware'.

Everything Peter Foldes has said with regard to correcting errors - on the
MS groups - has seemed to work for me too. I just wish he would
categorically state that he has *not* been posting on the Annexcafe.com
newsgroups. I am now aware that it is possible to 'fake' IP addresses, so it
seems feasible that whoever has posted on the user2user newsgroups as Peter
Foldes *could*, in fact, have been an imposter, simply using the same
posting style. It might, in fact, not be one individual at all - a team of
people could be invoved. I noticed that answers from the 'Peter Foldes' of
A/C were issued at any time, day or night, and I did question when 'he'
might sleep! <g>

I do now understand about Botnets. I am also aware that individuals from
Annexcafe scour the Microsoft newsgroups personally. I wonder just why they
do so.
Not to provide helpful advice to the unwary, I'm convinced of that! As I've
said elsewhere, 'the truth will out'!

Thanks for taking the time and trouble to reply at length. It is
appreciated. I have already actioned just about all the precautions you
mentioned, but I fear it is somewhat too late - Google knows all! :)

Re: Calling on a Guru to explain if I'm mistaken!

I apologise for yet another mistake in my post of this morning (I said
"...help is folk ..." instead of " ...help IF folk ..." )

Perhaps you will take note of my recent post to Mr.Slartybartfast and,
maybe, repond with your thoughts 'antoch'. I have no arguement with you.
