IE Running well so far

Thank you everyone! I really appreciate you sticking with me through this. Someone
sent me the 3 DLL files I was missing. I installed them and was able to run the
repair tool for IE6SP1. But that didn't help. I cleaned up my startup items with help
from the group. I deleted a lot of unnecessary files. I download IE6sp1 zip from an
e-mail and Gary walked my through the overinstall. I follow your advice on just about
every post. Forgive me for not answering all but we spent about 24 hours just going
through this. This is my third day and we are finally fixed. I think what did it is I
removed my firewall.....'Trial of Transgressions'....I think that was the name. and I
only use Avast resident protection (virus scanner).....not web protection or e-mail.
Spybot tea timer removed, as Gary said.
I ran scandisk.
I did so many things it's hard to remember them all. When I start my computer any
referral to ports, or joysticks, or the soundcard that I never had are gone. A few
little quirks remain such as when I try to send this e-mail, I get an error message
that the outbox can't be opened. So I will bypass the outbox from now on and send
messages right away. At least I can get online!!!

Thank you for posting back and letting everyone know what happened.
Looks like the firewall had been the cause of your problem.

I had a firewall that had been working fine for years...
then one day decided to block all my *outgoing* mail. That was an odd one.

Glad to hear you finally got it working. I tried a firewall once and
found it was a pain in the ass. I dont use them anymore.

As far as your outbox problem:
I dont use Outlook Express, but all email software has an outbox.
Maybe yours is overloaded with too many old messages, or the outbox is
corrupt. I'd backup your whole OE folder just in case you want to go
back to something in your outbox. Then remove everything in your
outbox. Close OE, restart it, and see if that solves the problem.
If OE has a "compact mailboxes" option, use it. I use Eudora, and I
have that option.

When you are finished online for the day, you should defrag your
harddrive after akk these changes and modifications,
Either click on the DEFRAG icon, or go to START, RUN, and type in
"defrag.exe". Hit enter key.

The mystery still remains as to where MSXML 4.0 SP1 came from, and what
disappeared those three other files, but what caused some grief was that the
machine was out of disk space. So we made some, were able to get rid of the
firewall and a couple of other things, update some apps, reinstall IE, etc.
There is another firewall in the mix, on the Belkin router, and it seems to
be blocking Avast!, too. So we discovered that leaving Web Shield out fixed
the problem with Avast!, just before their tech response, though it doesn't
explain how the no-browser-allowed problem was occurring when Avast! was
completely uninstalled. Whatever, it's worked all day, today.

I suspect further malware, but the system is 98 Original and is the original
install. Had AOL for various years, then EarthLink, then this cable company,
all with their installations of branded stuff, and the cable company's
"reach into your system and FIX things" umbilical, it's hard to sort stuff
out. Cleaned up what was necessary to clean up (machine will be replaced,
soon.) Further scans need to be run and a HJT log done right.

Uninstalled 823353, installed 837009, reinstalled 82353. But I'm not clear
that that was the thing to do. We were getting blitzy, so I'm not sure.

Frankly I'm not sure. When done with everything else [file checks,
anti-v/SpyWare, etc.] run C:\WINDOWS\QFECheck.exe and see if anything is
messed up.
Might cross-check the Windows Update.log and iuhist.xml if you used
windowsupdate during the process.

Oh yeah... That /nv switch didn't work when I tried it. What I don't get is
where she got 823353, since I've yet to see it offered by Windows Updates.
Thing is, KB823353 = MS04-18, whereas KB837009 = MS04-13. The notes in
MS04-18 say that it replaces MS04-13.

IOW, it would seem a failure of WU to not offer KB823353 to my system. I'd
be interested to know from folks: In Add/Remove Programs, do you have either
of these Updates listed (or both)?

I was a little too daunted by CdLSRN's long threads to finish reading
through them, I'm glad she is up and running again.
Anyway, a question. Last night I was installing Office97 in a laptop and I
noticed a folder on the CD, "VALUPACK". In VALUPACK there is a folder
IEXPLORE, and in the folder is the file IE4SETUP.EXE.

A lot of 98 users may still have this disk that came with their $2200.00 PII
desktops (and why not, it's a great program, and the security updates can
still be downloaded from Microsoft and burned to CD). So the obvious
question regarding Ginny's situation is, if she had the Office97 disk could
she have uninstalled IE6, installed IE4, navigated to Microsoft.com and got
IE6 going again from there?

837009 is listed on this system. The only 82**** in Add/Remove I presently
have is 823559. Its not shown in IE or iuhist either. Would this be related
to the SecCD usage perhaps?

I agree, if that was, in fact, the supposed update/supercede, then that is
what should be offered. There were installation issues associated with it,
so MAYBE Microsoft determined it would just delete/not offer it or SecCD
somehow over-rides installation. It did, however, appear in the old
installations [not SecCD updated] documented in 2006.

a "wonderful" mix of versions there on your machine right now :-/

So I stress you to install KB823353 with the /n:v parameter once
again (IE6.0sp1-KB823353-x86-ENU.exe /n:v). Please try this one in
normal mode, *not* safe mode. Afterwards please compare the versions

Uninstalling IE gives you two choices -- revert to the version that was
installed immediately before this one (IE 5.5, for instance) and only if the
backup files were saved. You can only do what you're suggesting by using a
third-party app to wipe every component of IE6 and previous versions. I
wouldn't want to do that. Besides, I think your version 4 of IE predates
that which was included in Win98 Gold (4.01), and you can't uninstall that
one, AFAIK.

Besides, the problem wasn't IE, per se, the main problem was firewall(s)
conflicting with Avast!'s WebShield. But then other strange things happened,
probably from whatever stuff the ISP installed, so we did what we could to
fix IE, replace missing files, etc., and it finally all seems to work
(except WebShield, since we haven't messed with her remaining firewall. Not
sure I want to do that over the phone. Not sure I can.

Only thing I can glean from that is that I see why the switch listed in that
exchange I linked to didn't work: It's /n:v, not /nv.

I dunno, I'm tired of it. There have been too many different versions of
IE/OE installed on the machine, starting with AOHell ten years ago and
ending with whatever her cable ISP installed. In any case, my test machine
is a mess from playing with that Auto-Patcher, and yet it would seem that
Windows Updates is not offering the some updates that it should be. 837009
is the latest one for OE, and even during all the testing I did when putting
together the Updates packages, I never saw any of these later versions, even
though they're supposed to be offered by WU.

I should have mentioned that Outlook Express is very poor software
that will allow viruses to infect your computer. I wont even allow
that POS on my computer. I deleted the entire directory many years
ago. I'd highly recommend finding another email software as well as
another usenet software. (some do both, such as the newer versions of
Agent).

If you follow proper security habits, including setting email apps to only
read messages in Plain Text, you never have to worry about any viruses
getting in. Doesn't matter what client you use. If you get a POS HTML email
that can't be read in PT, and you trust the source, then you can change to
view in HTML (in OE, anyway.)

Agreed and what I also noted.

WU does not offer all the updates that would or should be installed. The
files still offered are the ones which apparently caused no issues or which
had been repaired/updated or replaced...

That particular update [IIRC] was part of the December 2005 updates which
broke hundreds of thousands of 98 computers... could be wrong and I'm not
really interested at the moment.

I'm sure she appreciated all your help. Judging by what you say has
occurred, that computer would be a good candidate for complete re-install,
though I don't believe she may be up to it. I didn't look at that link, but
yeah, it surely wouldn't work using /nv.

Yeah, Autopatcher can cause lots of issues at times, and does make it
nearly impossible to use it as any kind of reference.

Makes no sense, part deux...

Result is that KB823353 is not considered a Critical Update and thus
shouldn't appear at WU. Yet it is listed as a replacement for KB837009 which
IS a Critical Update (and apparently for good reason.)

The SecUp CD precedes these Updates by a good two years. Shouldn't be any
part of the problem.

If you think it is of importance to find out, and if the
[msXML4*.*] files haven't been (security-)updated since
originally installed.
Then i would check their creation date, and then search the
HardDiskVolumes for files created that date. If there are many
files created that day, i'd sort files by modification-date.
Unfortunately the result-list doesn't have a Creation-date column
but many times, sometimes even if the application responsible for
installing the files under investigation have been uninstalled,
there are other tell-tale files left behind that can shed light
on it.
