IE Running well so far

Agreed, makes no sense except for the issues involved with its installation.

Issues related to its installation > end of support > remove it from WU.

This isn't the only file/update previously offered via WU, now "missing in
action".

| Makes no sense, part deux...
|
| Result is that KB823353 is not considered a Critical Update and thus
| shouldn't appear at WU. Yet it is listed as a replacement for KB837009
which
| IS a Critical Update (and apparently for good reason.)
|
| The SecUp CD precedes these Updates by a good two years. Shouldn't be any
| part of the problem.

This is pretty much the avast "anchor page" for all things Webshield+Win98,
complete with links to inspirational videos (I'm sure by this point you'd
rather be doing something else)

Well, that's the stub installer, don't know whether it would still work or
not with 98.
But without browser access as was the case, that was as distant as the
moon.

Thanks for re-posting the link though.

After reading the KB more closely, what KB823353 really says is that it does
is get rid of one of minor nuisance introduced by KB837009 -- like that
famous wandering "~" file, but also another vulnerability in IE5.5SP1. Other
than that, it apparently includes everything in KB837009. IOW, it does
replace the "previous" patch entirely. (I looked inside, they look nearly
identical.) So what happened, probably, is that reinstalling standard IE6SP1
over whatever she already had installed (including KB823353) caused a mix-up
that had WU seeing KB837009 as required, not noting that KB823353 was
already present. Reinstalling KB837009 was only necessary in order to stop
WU from wanting to install it (and it fails silently).

I'm thinking that while it wasn't necessary to reinstall KB837009, except to
stop any nagging by WU, it was a good idea to reinstall KB823353. As for PA
Bear's encounter, it sound's like that was an XP machine or it had an
unofficial patch installed, then reinstalled IE or something similar and ran
into the same issue, just with later versions.

Anyway, I'm adding KB823353 to my Updates CDs just as soon as another CD
burning session is called for, which will be pretty soon.

It's not that important. Just a curiosity. What I'm more interested in is
that it be up to date. WU Optional Updates offered what I thought was just
going to be MSXML 4.0 SP2 (or whatever the latest version is), but it turned
out to include the SDK. Haven't checked to see if the file versions got
updated, if I can get rid of the SDK without removing updated files, if any,
etc. As noted elsewhere, the machine is a bit of a mess, and my goal was to
get the lady back up and running, with at least most bases covered, until
she gets her new machine. Until then, she has her hands full with what
amounts to two sets of personal files (one provided by an Apple distributor
who in the end didn't impress Ginny) and she's not sure if anything new was
saved to the duplicate set, so at some point she either has to take it on
faith that nothing new was saved to the new folder, or that she is willing
to let go of any new files in that folder. Or find a decent file compare
app. There isn't enough room on her HD to maintain the duplicates forever.

Which was why I emailed it to her, and then it turned out she only had a few
MB of free space left on the disk. Less than a hundred MB *before* she
received the IE files.

My msxml4.dll, msxml4a.dll, and msxml4r.dll, were all modified on February 4,2002. I
bought the machine from Dell in 1999. XPS T450, desktop. Ginny

Wish I could remember what that "Q" stands for (Query?)... Used to be Q*****
was the naming format for any patch, and it is still used. KB = Knowledge
Base and the KB article that explained a Q patch came with the same
following digits Then there's the Technet Security Bulletins named MS04-018,
for instance. These various naming conventions are all used in various
places to name the patch, and you never know how it's going to appear in any
particular place.

As noted, we replaced KB837009 with KB823353, which is why KB837009 still
doesn't appear in Add/Remove Programs. In essence, it was Removed. If you'd
looked in between the Updates, you'd have seen 837009 listed, but the
installation of 823353 removed it..

All three are version 4.10.9404.0 and they were all created 2/4/02.
msxml4.dll is 80.5 KB, msxml4r.dll is 1.17 MB, msxml4a.dll is 43.5 KB.

| After reading the KB more closely, what KB823353 really says is that it
does
| is get rid of one of minor nuisance introduced by KB837009 -- like that
| famous wandering "~" file, but also another vulnerability in IE5.5SP1.
Other
| than that, it apparently includes everything in KB837009. IOW, it does
| replace the "previous" patch entirely. (I looked inside, they look nearly
| identical.) So what happened, probably, is that reinstalling standard
IE6SP1
| over whatever she already had installed (including KB823353) caused a
mix-up
| that had WU seeing KB837009 as required, not noting that KB823353 was
| already present. Reinstalling KB837009 was only necessary in order to stop
| WU from wanting to install it (and it fails silently).
|
| I'm thinking that while it wasn't necessary to reinstall KB837009, except
to
| stop any nagging by WU, it was a good idea to reinstall KB823353. As for
PA
| Bear's encounter, it sound's like that was an XP machine or it had an
| unofficial patch installed, then reinstalled IE or something similar and
ran
| into the same issue, just with later versions.
|
| Anyway, I'm adding KB823353 to my Updates CDs just as soon as another CD
| burning session is called for, which will be pretty soon.

I repaired the C.A.spam blocker instead of removing it. I downloaded Sygate5.5.2577
as 5.6.2808 doesn't support Win 98se.
After installation it said IE was loading a new dll for Avast, so I said o.k. but I
didn't write it down.

Then it said IE is loading new dll.....C:\WINDOWS\System MFC42LOC.DLL

Then when I opened Outlook Express Mail I got this :

A new DLL has been loaded to Outlook Express. This is common if you have updated O.E.
lately. (because of firewall)

The new DLLs have been loaded:

Good morning. Since I installed Sygate, every time I go to one of my OE accounts, or
a IE page it wants to install new dlls or it won't let me go there. I will try to
stop Sygate and see what happens. Is this a normal thing since I used the IE6sp1
installer? Should I allow all these dlls (much more than I posted last night.
So in summary, my computer works but only if I let it add a LOT of dlls. Ginny
