If you read the whole article it plainly shows that part of Linux demise
at that school was more of MS keeping competition out. They switched to
laptops that had Vista And Office preloaded and that was non-negotiable
on the schools end.

Fact : either you are a liar OR you are incompetent.

I wonder which it is.

Neither. I still remember the days in a company where the Netware servers
were to be replaced by Win-NT servers.
They ended up with 4 times as many boxen (more powerfull ones, too) and
still had not migrated everything and so had to continue running Netware on
one machine.
The switch was done by MS certified personnel, BTW. Just that you can stick
your "incompetent" accusation where the suns don't shine

Windows is incredibly shoddy as a server OS, and few things have gotten
better with the latest offerings

Linux costs you, if you want to get picky about "How much is time worth".
There is (to me) three types of linux distro, newbie, intimdiate &
advanced, and the same applies to the linux user. Some users are smarter
and pick stuff up quicker. On the other hand, others are slower and more
cautious, Im in the 2nd group. Im not thick, not saying I am, but Ive
spent a lot of time and effort in getting linux to work for me. Its been
slow and painful, but well worth it, so the initial outlay may have been
zero, but Ive gained bucket loads in experience.

Well this is also true of ALL operating systems, not just Linux. You
think that Windows or the Mac has no learning curve? All software
requires some effort and time. As those using Vista, not just new users
but those have used XP. Yes, I agree with you, my time is worth
something, it may not be $100/hr but it sure as hell isn't $0/hour.

That being said, it all depends on how you want to spend that money.
Frankly, I look at it as a learning experience, and learning costs--no
free lunch in this world. I must admit that I tried Linux back in the
early days of Red Hat, found it would require too much (which I didn't
have that period in my life) and pretty much dropped it until last year
when I tried Ubuntu 7.04. Very great strides have been made to the
operating system and a great deal of new software has been added. In its
latest form (8.04) it is now far easier to learn and use.
