Gary S. Terhune
To get your Product Key from the Registry, and a few other things, it's
easiest to use Magic Jelly Bean.
http://magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/
But if you want to know where it's located, it's in the Registry. Use
Regedit to go to:
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
The ProductKey is listed in the right-hand panel. It's in the format
xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx
Now, if your machine is a brand-name machine, and came with a Win98
installation CD, the code you want will be on a sticker somewhere one the
outside of the machine itself. The code in the Registry is more likely from
the copy used to create an installation Image (with added applications from
the manufacturer) that they use to install thousands or more machines. That
Registry code will NOT likely work with any CD you received, though it's
possible.
In any case, there's a good chance you won't need it -- unless we can't fix
it.
