It's only 7:19 PM, Chauvin-- your post shows 7:48!

For the others reading: IIRC, to run the IE Repair tool or an
over-install of IE, one must switch those .dll's back first.

I actually followed you to this newsgroup because you

Okay - - did they happen to mention what the limitations

This makes me wonder if ANYONE hasever used and enjoyed that "View as
Web page" feature in Explorer? I hated it the first time I saw it,
and still do. It reminds me of XP, and I find XP absolutely
repulsive.
I have never known one person that uses that View as Web Page setting.
I wish it could be entirely removed.

I solved it by restoring an older backup, and not reinstalling IE6.
I still want to play around with the screwed up installation and
change these DLL files.

By the way, I learned something from this.
When you restore a backup, you can copy the desktop folder from your
current version into the backup after it's renamed to desktop2 or
something. That way you can copy new links and stuff to the actual
desktop.

Yes, I believe that is true. I'd just keep a copy of the replacement
DLLs in a separate folder and copy them back. Better yet, ZIP them.

I wont have that problem, I am not going to reinstall IE6. IE5.5 is
fine, since I rarely ever use IE anyhow.

I haven't tried it myself, but I believe you can "de-webify" Win98SE
with 98lite:
http://www.litepc.com/98lite.html

I'd only experiment with a fresh install, though, not an over-install.
I'd also expect the unexpected when you apply updates.

I just thought of something. What if someone installs a different
program as a file manager. Will the computer still freeze after a
major copy or delete? I just downloaded an old file manager called
Servant Salamander (freeware) from http://vorvan.sh.cvut.cz/salamander
I just installed it, but I kind of like it so far. I guess I can only
give this a try on my screwed up copy of win98, and see what happens.

Windows 98 Second Edition is lite and so what is the point of lightening it

XP can look just like Win98. Mine does.

? My computer tray clock is showing me it's within seconds of my Atomic
Clock on the wall, so I'm not sure what you're seeing with those odd #
minutes.

Although I've had glimpses on other forum posts on the past, that my ISP's
server in some cases ends up posting a 1 hour difference depending on where
I'm posting too however when I post here and when the post shows up the
time it says it's posted as is accurate to my clock.

My XP Professional does too. BTW, I wanted to switch from Internet Explorer
7 to IE 6 for XP Pro. and even with Microsoft's help, I now have *.dll with
application failed. Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.16 on XP Professional SP3 is now
gone and removed at Microsoft's suggestion because I wanted to attend their
Live Meeting and Microsoft told me it could only be done within Internet
Explorer and so XP Professional web browsers are now all toast. The rest of
the operating system still works normally and I will eventually do a full
backup and clean install. I will not go with Internet Explorer 7 again
because it does not work as well as Internet Explorer 6 fully updated. I am
glad IE 5.5 works well for the poster and on my 98 SE side, it works well
fully updated with one MS-DOS error that I am still investigating but I will
post about that another time when I actually have time to work on it. I know
I am hijacking this post but I figured it is okay since the issue has been
resolved and all the people are posting here in this topic that I want to see
this post. Have a great September 11, 2001 and remember it has already been
7 years which I can hardly believe because the event is still so fresh in my
mind but enough of that and God Bless Everyone especially Canada, Ireland,
USA, Africa, New Zealand, Australia, England, France, Spain, Scotland,
Belgium, Germany and yes even Russia. <smile>

http://www.litepc.com/swap.html

"The CHUBBY desktop is 100% Windows98, and is the ideal speed boost
for people who do not own Windows95, or that simply must have the
Windows98 shell enhancements. The CHUBBY desktop is the same Explorer
desktop that is installed with Windows98, but the View as a Web Page
and Active Desktop features have been totally removed to breath some
life back into Explorer. You can turn these features off normally, but
Explorer is still doing a lot of redundant work in the background.
98lite removes the features completely, including all the associated
registry baggage to maximise the performance of your desktop
environment."

98lite is claimed to "eliminate the performance robbing waste of
resources from features you don't use". If this means that my
ResourceMeter won't go into the red as often as it does now, then
maybe 98lite is worth a look.

Thanks, my customized 98 Second Edition certainly does not need lite. I
agree with Gary S. Terhune that it is essential to be edit to manually edit
the registry to remove old entries and also it is great because it is a
complete clean install on a custom build with a Falcon Northwest case because
it was originally a Falcon Nortwest with Windows 98 back in about the year
2000. Now with 2 hard drives and 98 Second Edition as the primary operating
system it is awesome and the nice thing is 98 SE does not go down for me at
least like XP Professional does or like even Vista Home Premium can. I will
indeed have to eventually do a clean install of XP Professional but wonder
whether I should have the file system for XP Pro. in Fat32 rather than NTFS
because despite the security of NTFS it does not seem to have the stability
of the Fat32 file system at least in my testing of computers and my
observations. I am sure everyone will be outraged to hear my opinion about
this and strongly disagree but that is why we all post here to share our
ideas and opinions and allow others to correct us despite when it hurts.

Very good. I see Chauvin has confirmed the phenomenon. I guess I was too
busy testing to notice it.

You are welcome. Glad to have been helpful.

| I just thought of something. What if someone installs a different
| program as a file manager. Will the computer still freeze after a
| major copy or delete? I just downloaded an old file manager called
| Servant Salamander (freeware) from http://vorvan.sh.cvut.cz/salamander
| I just installed it, but I kind of like it so far. I guess I can only
| give this a try on my screwed up copy of win98, and see what happens.

3rd-party products have a chance to circumvent the problem. I know that
HDValet can do the deletes just fine-- so long as the option to use the
Recycle Bin is not used...!...

http://www.pcmag.com/ 's HDValet is configurable & installs with
pre-configured suggestions. It can delete to the Recycle Bin, to a
holding folder of its own or to oblivion. By design, it will not
delete empty folders, after the files are gone. Also, it will not delete
files that are "in use". It isn't pre-configured to delete its own log
& doesn't over-write it so, occasionally, do go in and trim it.
