A friend brought me a laptop with Windows 8 to the Dominican Republic. I teach English online and needed a second computer. After a couple days or less using it Windows forced an update, and Blackboard Collaborate and gmail started acting up, dropping classes etc. Finally I had no choice but to restore the computer to before the update. Next few days were pretty uneventful, then today the update forced again despite me telling the computer not to allow updates without my acceptance. Since that moment of restart I get blue screen every few minutes. I downloaded a scanning program and it says there are no threats. Is there a patch to repair the damage done by the windows update. My return options for the computer are nil, and my work depends on me having a working computer. I appreciate your help. View this thread

Since the last update, I'm having a very difficult time with viewing folder contents. I typically like to view thunbnails since a lot of what I do is graphical. Now, the thumbnails won't display and explorer keeps freezing, preventing some folders from ever opening (Not Internet Explorer, but the windows explorer). If I right click to look at properties (or just to make sure the extensions are associated with the right program), I get a spinning wheel and nothing happens. I'm running Win 7 64-bit and this is the first update that has given me issues. Any ideas how I can fix this problem? View this thread

I am using Windows 7. When I open up my computer it attempts to configure the updates and gets 35% done and then says that it can't configure the updates, reverting changes. The problem is not installing the updates. The problem is configuring them. I have tried the troubleshooter and that doesn't solve the problem. View this thread

I believe that this is an important update. I was offered this update on my Vista and Windows 7 64 bit computer. I am not being offered this update on my Windows 7 64bit laptop. I purchased this computer in December 2011, after the root certificate problem which prompted Microsoft to issue other root certificate updates. I found and downloaded them and Microsoft said they were not appropriate for my system when I tried to install them. I tried installing kB981125 for XP sp3 and that didn't give an indication of it's being installed or not - but it did not show up in the "view installed updates" area, or in the event viewer. Is it possible that this computer doesn't require the KB931125 update? View this thread

I installed Windows 8 a couple of weeks ago and appeared not to have too many problems. I installed and have been using Microsoft Office 2003 quite happily for the past week or so. Unfortunately in the last few days this changed. The main issue is that I cannot use the open dropdown box from the top menu for word or excel. I click File, Open and nothing happens the dialogue box that is normally populated with a list of files is now displayed completely blank. I have now compounded the problem because I decided to uninstall / re-install Office 2003 only to find that I cannot now even use the Outlook menu to configure and select my Outlook data files. Once again if I try to add a data file the dialogue box is displayed blank so I am unable o select a file to open.. I have experimented by trying some of the other dropdown options in word and excel only to find that any dropdown box that would normally be populated with a list of files is shown blank. I can open files by directly accessing it in windows and clicking it. At which point the spreadsheet or word documsnt opens as expected. Seeing too many other forum logs about sudden unexplained issues following windows upates to be comfortable about this version of windows. View this thread

On my WP7 phone I frequently use the Facebook chat built into messaging (I don't have a cell connection in the back of my apartment so it comes in useful). Ever since I have hooked up Facebook on Windows 8 through it's messaging my phone stops receiving Facebook chat messages. Instead, these messages are delivered to Windows 8 if I'm still logged in, which I usually am. My first thought was, remove Facebook from the Windows 8 messaging app. The problem is, when I did that, it also removed it from my phone (and this one reason why saved settings in the cloud can backfire). What are my options, I want to receive these chat messages on my phone, not on Windows 8 (and I'm not logging out everytime I might want to receive them on my phone, it's just not an option as I go in and out of meetings everyday and closing everything down 4-5 times a day just isn't going to happen, nor should it have to as it wasn't the case when I used Windows 7). I wouldn't mind receiving them on both devices but that doesn't appear to be an option, it's like it's delivered and it's first come first serve on what device gets to it first (and since the Win8 Desktop is on a super fast wired connection, it always seems to get it first). How do I get Windows 8 to stop receiving the FB messages so my WP7 phone begins receiving them again (since removing the account on Win8 also removed it from WP7 unfortunately)? So I want to purchase win 8 pro full version, so as to install on other PCs also. Is it possible to convert this upgrade version to full version by paying the difference amount? The error message is " This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Association Control Panel." If I copy paste the link into my browser it works, if I open my emails in the provider's webmail the link works. I have uninstalled, repaired and uninstalled the program a few times. Nothing fixes it??? This problem is in all emails that I rec'v, not from just 1 source. View this thread

From Help: "If you're saving your backups on a hard drive or network location, Windows Backup will create a new, full backup for you automatically when needed." This indicates it is possible to save backups on a network location, but I don't see a way to specify one in Backup and Restore settings. It only shows hard drives, DVD, etc. View the thread

I cannot use the Windows 7 Remote Desktop Client to connect to my Windows 8 Pro machine using a Microsoft account. It fails as if it's a bad password. I've tried multiple formats:me@email.com email.comme email.comme@email.com pcnameme@email.com etc. Interestingly it does work using Remote Desktop Connection Manager v2.2.
