  2. I recently had a new lap top supplied to me from work because my laptop at home has broken beyond repair. I didnt like all the extra software that toshiba had installed on the computer and as I was 2 days away from travelling out from UK to Asutralia i decided it would be quicker to reformat myself. I did a clean install of windows 7, using the disc I had for my home PC. I thought that the windows key that came with the laptop would be ok to use but it refused the key, so i decided to install from my own disc being as it is not being run on my home computer anymore. I now have the activation window counting down the days I have left to activate and I am in australia, and cannot get back to the UK for 3 weeks. I am worried sick that my laptop will stop working and that I will not be able to communicate with home or do any work. I do not have the product key from the disc with me, I only have the key on the back of the lap-top. Is it possble for microsoft to reassign the activation key in my windows to the one which is current andd was initially installed on my lap top. Any help or feedback will be very much aappreciated. I rely on my laptop for everything from famly communications to work diary, repot writing etc. At the moment i don' dare to try doing anything myself incase I make a mistake and lose the days left before it freezes from not being activated. 3. On 10/18/12 I received an automatic Windows update of my nVidia drivers. They apparently failed to install and caused me to have to restore my system to an earlier version. I went to the nVidia web site and tried manually updating the graphics drivers. They failed there as well. Anyone else experiencing this problem? View the thread

  6. Hi, What are prerequisites for Windows 8 system images to be "found" by the system image restore facility? Any way to force Windows 8 to find a specific backup that is for some reason invisible to the restore facility? I made a system image of my Windows 8 Pro installation (using Control Panel -> Windows 7 File Recovery -> System image), then installed another OS on my main drive for a while, and now I'm trying to revert to the Windows 8 image I have. The problem is that the system image restore function does not find any images on my machine. I don't think this is an issue with missing drivers, because the hard drive and the system image files themselves can be seen by launching the command prompt right from the the Windows 8 recovery mode (which can be reached either by using the installation media, or by going to Settings -> PC Settings -> General -> Advanced startup). For some reason, the system image restore fails to recognize the backups. At the same time, it is able to see some older (Windows 7 related) images that I have on a separate drive. I'm pretty much clueless as to the reason, but for what it's worth, here are some random thoughts that have crossed my mind: Can the new VHDX backup format be somehow messing up discovery? It would seem kind of far fetched to even suspect Microsoft of releasing a product which does not recognize its own new backup format? Does recovery of a system image require that the same Windows 8 installation that made the image is still installed (i.e. is the use somehow limited strictly to recovery from disasters, as opposed to recovery after installing a totally different OS in between installations? Any ideas are very welcome! View the full article

  9. Will Microsoft be fixing the issue with start button, where if one is using a mouse and moves to the bottom left side of screen to make the Start button appear (why? One can't help but ask... the taskbar is there, so why not just have a permanent button on it like the last 20+yrs of GUI usability has proven works!!? BAD decision that one!!) ... why the start button disappears even though I haven't yet moved my mouse off of it. I'm still hovering my mouse pointer over it, but yet it still disappears and more often than not I end up clicking the program underneath it instead. Would it be possible to make the Start button NOT disappear until the user makes the decision to move their mouse pointer from it completely. If my pointer is hovering over it, I don't understand why it is disappearing. This goes against ALL usability practices!! This is a deal-breaker. If this isn't repaired within the next month I shall be uninstalling Windows 8 from my own machine and recommending that all of my clients DO NOT upgrade to it. I shall also be actively promoting alternatives to Windows 8. This is such a shame! You had the chance to make something great, but instead you gave us Windows 8. Umm catchy...!! (unlike Windows 8 uptake!) View the full article

  12. I have a pair of 500GB drives configured as a mirrored storage space, which is reported in the Manage Storage Spaces applet as: "Two-way mirror 493 GB Using 929 GB pool capacity" To test this thoroughly I've filled the storage space, and as expected (from what I'd read) Windows 8 automatically takes the drive offline. Disk Manager shows "The disk is offline because it is out of capacity". Now, I'd like to be able to delete some files from the storage space, but as soon as I try to bring the drive online, it immediately goes offline again. How do you get out of this situation? The fan is running and the HD light flashes every 5 - 10 seconds but that's it. I'm not that knowledgable about computers so I have no idea how to fix this, any help would be appreciated. The following solutions recommended by what have been able to find have not worked: I have tried Microsoft Readiness tool several time with no success. 21. I have 2 monitors on my Win8 Enterprise PC. I like to have the same background picture displayed on both screens. It would seem in Windows 8, the default is to have 2 *different* backgrounds displayed on the 2 monitors. That's fine, but how do you get Win8 to use the same background on both monitors, and at the same time use all the backgrounds in your desktop background list (Personalize > Desktop Backgrounds). The only way I can find to have the same background on both displays is to right click *one* of the thumbnails in the desktop backgrounds list, and choose "set for all monitors". However, when you do this, you disable all the other chosen thumbnails, and are stuck with just the one background. Uggg. So how I do I get it back to the old Win7 way? View the full article

The following may be of interest to people who either prefer to or have to use the Desktop UI (not the new Metro or Modern UI) in Windows 8 for their work or play whatever the reason, a growing list can be foundhere on the MSFN Forum: And presently, as of Nov. 17, 2012, 6:49 PM AST time, for those who'd prefer to have a quick look, the list contains the following: Tihiy's Windows 7 Explorer for Windows 8 Tihiy's StartIsBack (implements the original Windows 7 Start Menu on Win8) Classic Shell Classic Shell skin featuring Windows 7-look Start Menu Boot directly to desktop Hack Windows 8 Metro How to boot to the desktop in Windows 8 Skip Metro Suite Start8 (now providing a Windows 7-style Start Menu) Spesoft Windows 8 Start Menu Start Menu X related toStart Menu 7 (page providing additional information) Start Button 8 (designed to work with Start Menu X) ViStart andViStart 8 Start Buttons (designed to work with ViStart) Power8 Win8StartButton (new link available in English and German) IObit StartMenu8 Win+X Menu Editor (not exactly a Start Menu, but can be used to easily add functionality to the right-click "Power User" menu) Win8 Charms Gesture + Start to Desktop (bypasses Metro Start Screen, adjusts mouse action for Charms) Wentutu Start Menu (pin frequently used programs to Start Menu boot directly to Desktop) -- but seebug report in this thread Pokki Menu (boot straight to the Desktop and disable the hot corners) Bypass Modern UI boots natively to the Desktop without pausing on the Start Screen BringBack (the Windows Start Menu) by Revel (but see the advisoryhere in item 6) RetroUI provides a Metrofied Start Menu and can bypass the Metro Start Screen, but also provides a Start Button and a taskbar for the Metro screen and allows for running Windows Store apps in a Desktop window ExtremeTech has published a method using the Task Scheduler to automatically bypass the Metro screen and go to the Desktop upon boot StartMenuPlus8 features extensive customization choices, including a "Recent Items" button Boot to Desktop for Windows 8 andStart for Windows 8, both by tech author Steve Sinchak, can work together for a complete button+menu solution (although the menu is Metro-based) HP Quick Start -- a major PC maker gets in the act of reviving the Start Menu 8StartButton (in free and paid versions) StartOnDesktop bypasses the Windows 8 Start Screen Viva Start Menu (includes a custom Start Button) Will Microsoft return the Start Button/Start Menu to the Windows 8 Desktop UI. . .
