  2. On a small sidenote, why does this one always comes up by the Windows 8 fans, as if it's some sort of unique revelation: http://news.cnet.com/8618-10805_3-57551433.html?assetTypeId=12&messageId=13258972 I don't understand the big deal about the start menu. Press the windows key [on W8]( that little key next to the key) and type in the name of a program you want to run. BOOM!!!! there it is, now click on it. Seems pretty damn easy. What am I missing? In all Windows 8 discussions so far, I've read this all the time, and only in defense of W8. Hey, guys, are you aware that this works exactly like that on Win 7 and Vista, too? Even better, you still have your open programs in focus while you're typing and no full-screen fudge is distracting you out of your context! Wow! View the full article
  3. Since the Windows 7 auto download and update on November 16, 2012 my Windows x64 Profressional system take a very long time to boot, it starts normally, then the video goes blank for several minutes(I get no signal on my monitor), all my usb devices (N52te speed pad, G15 keyboard, G7 laser mouse) have no lights, and disk activity is very minimal for few minutes, then my screen and usb come back it fully boots. Also my Windows Security Essential popups and tells me real time protection is turned off. My system ran fine until this update. It is an ASUS P8Z68-V GEN3 and Core i7 2600k with 16Gb RAM. I just run XMP profile for the turbo mode. View this thread

11. Greetings one and all, Alrighty then let me give ya the sitch. When I purchased my computer two years ago I barely had the money, bucks, dough, or dollars to buy it so I had to skimped on what I desired. The main thing that got the proverbial axe was the Blu Ray drive/player, my PS3 could handle plqaying those already so I wasn't too broken up about not having one in the computer, after all it was a short trek to the entertainment center to pop in the dics and hit play. Well that was then and this is now and I've become totally lazy and would rather not have to make the now loooong trek to the PS3 to play my Blu Ray DVDs anymore and would rather have this accomplished via my computer without needing to install another drive. So now I'm looking for ways to accomplish these tasks by getting either an external Blu Ray drive/player, or utilize one of the many "Virtual Blu Ray Drive/Player programs I've seen available for download on the net? Now the first choice ie.. the external drive is a pretty easy thing to install, just pop the USB cord into the USB port and tah dah Bob's your uncle you've got a Blue Ray Drive/Player! The second path, that being the Virtual Blu Ray Drive/Player program, is becoming a far more confusing matter, a matter that I'm now contacting you fine intelligent people about. Okay my stupid question is this..... Will these programs work via my factory installed DVD/CD Reader/Burner Combo Drive make it possible to play my Blu Ray DVDs on my compute? Or will I actualy have to purchase something else to accomplish this? "Help me Obiwan you're my only hope!" Tiffany Snow View the thread
  12. After getting a new laptop 4 years ago on with Windows XP pre-installed, it was capable of living up to its use requirements useage, being a student on a Level 3 IT Course the computer is a key tool. When Windows 7 was released I didn't jump straight into it as Windows XP still lived up to its needs but a few months after Windows 7 was out it was time to upgrade to keep up with the performance and security plus with Windows 7 offering more features it was tough not to upgrade. So I went out a got a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium (32-bit and 64-bit). After installing the difference was clear it was worth the investment. Recently this computer finally gave up the go and has since been replaced by a custom built tower currently using Windows XP Professional SP3 but it just not the same, as once you upgrade to 7 you never want to go back and still currently being a full time student I could opt to purchase a 2nd Key at student rate but why abandon what already works? More to the point will it be possible to use the same Product Key to activate the same Windows 7 on the new computer? I also understand manual activation may be required. View the thread
  13. I have a Windows 7 box set that was never used and want to use it,but first I need to know if I can install the 32 bit on one computer and the 64 bit on a different computer? It has two dvd's,64bit and 32bit. View the thread
  14. I work in a computer lab at a Jr College. We are thinking of going to windows 8. But the notion of touch screens is down right idiotic. Having student bang on our screens. Leaving dirty finger prints. Very unsanitary. It is hard enough to keep the keyboards clean. Now the screens, which you cannot just wipe with a wet rag. The students we get are mostly right out of highschool and we get disabled students. They have enough trouble just logging in, this touch screen menus without touch screens will be impossible. So now you have the screen filled with the "Menu" can cannot see your work just to look at your disk drive? Touch screens are useless. We also teach typing and most people are their for Word. Your hands are on the keyboard so why go to the screen, the mouse is closer and lest strain on the arms. I will recommend that IT does not go to windows 8. Touch screens are not an option in a college environment. Microsoft does not think about the school use of their OS. The OS is getting to personal. We need computers, security and ease of use for PUBLIC computers that can be easily maintained. I made a lot of tweeks to get things to work on XP and windows 7. There should be a setting in Windows 8 to make it look like 7 for NO TOUCH SCREEN. I do not like touch screens. I do not have a cellphone, notebook, laptop or I pad or any other yuppy Apple I thing. I am a electronics technician so I am very good with technology but my 40 years of experience says "KEEP THINGS SIMPLE". If you take away the touch screen Windows 8 functions the same as 7 it still uses NTuser! All my reg files work and other tricks. So it is just about a touch screen and moving things around again not making it better and there is still 10GM in the windows directory! My question is how do I tweek it to get rid of the touch screen menu? Make it look like 7? View the full article
  15. I have Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1, 64 bit. I have not been able to run Windows Update for about a week. It keeps saying it can't update because the service isn't running. I have checked in the services and it shows that it is 'started'. Thank you. View this thread

  17. I have a client with a small domain where I just brought up a Server 2012 Print Server. The printers are mapped via GPP. Most clients are now running Windows 8 with the few remaining ones running Windows 7. One Windows 8 client is having a problem mapping a particular HP LaserJet. All other clients are having no trouble mapping any printer via the GPP. When I try to add the printer via Add a Printer it won't connect to the printer giving a 0x0000007e error. I've looked this up but there doesn't seem to be a consensus on how to correct this error. I was able to map the user to the printer by running the Add a Printer wizard but instead of selecting the printer that appears, I selected "The printer I want isn't listed" and then selected the add the printer by IP address. The printer mapped and the driver installed with no problem. So why can I add the printer via the wizard by IP address, but it won't add via GPP and it errors out in the wizard if I select the printer from the list of printers displayed?
