From Full Circle, an on line Ubuntu magazine Q & A column:

A few weeks ago, I

updated using the

Update Manager. I

reboot as requested,

but I couldn't get back into

Ubuntu. I asked for help around

the forums, but had internet

access problems. Finally I

decided to reinstall using the

Live CD as suggested (with

some kind people's advice).

But I lost a lot of time & effort.

Poor jerk. Installed Ubuntu and the first time he upgraded it died and

he had to re-install.

Another one:

For the past months I have been getting "your session lasted less then

10 seconds" so I have been unable to log onto Ubuntu.

Nice one. Install Ubuntu and it won't let you log in.

And yet another:

I've tried a few low cost Bluetooth dongles and have discovered that

they work with windows but not Ubuntu. It seems I was using dongles

that used firmware by CSR which is apparently unsupported by

Ubuntu....

Great, you install Ubuntu and the economical versions stop working.

Windows can but Ubuntu can't.

If this kind of stuff is published in a magazine that was started to

support Ubuntu imagine what is published in an unbiased magazine.

Gosh, he had Internet connection problems and couldn't update properly.

The same thing would happen to Windows except you'd probably get an

endless BSOD reboot.

When using any OS, one should research hardware before buying it.

Not sure you want to switch from Windows to Ubuntu? Buy a new hard drive

and install it on that. Gosh, are you really that challenged that you

couldn't figure that out?

So you are saying Windows has never had an update cause a

problem ? (Wrong)

And you are also saying that Windows supports devices that

Linux doesn't. True. By the same token though, how many times

has there been a device that was one or two years old, that

was supported and worked in Linux, and it *still* worked in

the next version, and the next version, and the next version,

etc.....what about the switch from XP to Vista ? How many

devices did *that* break ?

.......Besides.....if a peripheral doesn't work in Windows,

it's the third-party mfgs fault and not a Windows issue, yet

if theirs no Linux drivers for it, it's a Linux problem?

And to get back to the content of the OP, are you also saying

that the 'list' is wrong, and you can't do those things in

Linux?

That seems to be a valid problem, the problem itself anyway.

'Not being able to use your computer for months' because of

it.......well......

A quick Google on the error message gets back hits.......

From the Ubuntu forums....

Redhat

Xfce

Fedora

CentOS

Debian & Mint obviously.

ZenWalk

Gentoo

Novell SUSE

SELinux

This obviously is not an 'Ubuntu' problem, and seems to be

permissions related, and not too widespread.

No, it's you.

The Linux thing is just secondary.

Look, I make no wild claims about Linux nor its future.......I

either correct mis-information, or am looking for a fact-based

logical explaination to someone's negative claims.......

Read my fuckin headers,dumbass.

Your opening statement mentions "shooting Windows out the

window"...whatever the hell that means.

Nothing of side-by-side,mutiple HDDs,or partitioning schemes.

Idiot...one minute It's to replace Windows, next it's "well, you still

need Windows".

Pick a friggen position, stick to it, and stop waffling about.

Maybe he does mean we as in me too, I don't know, but why does

that add some crazy homosexual connotation to the fact that

two people in one place don't agree with you ? We know

everyone wants to be liked, but face it, you can't be liked by

everyone.

Is that so hard to believe as you come off as so egotistical

as you do, with 'I know everything' and 'I'm never wrong' and

being elitist in every thing you say and all of your ideals.

If someone doesn't 'like' you, it's because there's something

wrong with them ? Maybe there's something wrong with you.

How narcissistic can you be ?

Well, as expected you show your ignorance, not only of computers, but

now of Ubuntu.

Here is the reply from Full Circle, who apparently know more about

Ubuntu they you do.

Each update is

stringently tested by

either the Ubuntu

development team or

one of the MOTUs before it is

allowed into the main

repository, with the update

generally going into the

"proposed" updates section for

people to test. Unfortunately

though, it is impossible to try it

with everyone's configuration,

so the best thing to do in a

case like this is to submit a bug

report so that (all going well) it

will not happen again.

Well it may be bullshit but here is what the magazine replied:

If you can log into Recovery mode

should be an option when booting,) you

can go into the root shell, and create

a new user name to log in with.

You can do that with these two commands:

#useradd (username)

#passwd (username)

Replacing (username) with your new login name.

Reboot and try to log in using your new account.

unfortunately if this doesn't work your best bet

is probably to back up your data and reinstall Ubuntu.

you need to re-word that statement, as in:

"When using any OS, other then Windows, one should research hardware

before buying it. Particularly when using Ubuntu."

Alias, you are a liar. And, if your response above is any indication

you know very little about Linux, or Ubuntu.

The point is that Alias didn't have a clue about how to correct the

problem, although the magazine had provided a serviceable fix (make a

new account), which I later posted for his perusal.

A Linux expert he doesn't seem to be.
