You might consider quickly getting another DSL provider and then canceling
the ATT one. Don't they have something like a 30-day guarantee?

I helped Angel set up her DSL. As soon as things got hooked up, the modem
detected the computer and popped up an installation procedure. That
procedure activated the account and installed a couple of utilities and that
was it. Definitely, no CD installation was required and at no point did any
of it have problems due to its being Win98. Of course, they may have changed
the setup procedure since then (again!!!)

Have you tried accessing the modem? Addresses to try are 192.168.1.0,
192.168.1.1, or 192.168.1.254. If none of those work, try replacing the 1 in
the third spot to 2.

Eduardo,
I got the Modem from ATT. Brand 2wire Gateway. It is an external modem
that you just plug in to the Ethernet port. It is more expensive than a
regular one from them. You do not need a firewall with it as you need to use
with the less expensive one. Read Gary Tehune's post. He knows more than I
do about these things, a lot more. He is an expert. I could say more, but I
don't want to give him a big head.

Right-- he likes his head to be 2" smaller than his belly. That way, he
doesn't explode after swallowing it!

Hi Eduardo,
You mentioned the make of the modem. What is the model? Are you sure it
is westrell versalink and not westell versalink? I went to the website of
the Westell company. They make a lot of Modems. When I tried to go to the
westrell website, there were no modems listed. Did you get it from Verison?
When I went to Yahoo Search it has only 2 links listed. Again as you were
asked from the experts list your make and modell of the modem.
Well, I have to get off because of a thunder storm is moving in. A
severe one.

Hi Eduardo,
I read the answers from the link you posted. I also went up to the
Westell website and found out that the complete Model number is possibly:
C90-327W30-06 made for Bell South. Am I right? I think Gary tried to tell
you how to set it up? If any questions ask again what is not clear to you.
Well now there is a tornado warning for my county. So I have to get off and
shut down my computer.

Have you seen this?
http://onlinehelp.verizon.net/consumer/bin/pdf/VersaLink327WGatewayQuickStartGuide.pdf

Right there on page 4, it states that the modem is compatible with all
Windows 9x editions. Also, the address they say is default for that modem's
access is
http://dslrouter or http://192.168.1.1

Well, for issues with Vista, you're going to need the Vista newsgroups. Lots
of helpful people over there, too.

ok gary look at this

After connecting your PC to the modem, run "WinIPcfg". If everything is
working, it should show that you have an IP address (probably something like
192.168.1.5). Check the internet gateway address it lists - probably
192.168.1.254.

NO IP ADDRESS WHEN I FIRST OPEN WINIPCOFG OR WHEN I REsTART THE MNACHINE
AND YES I HAVE A PPP ADAPTER

If that much isn't working, then you might have a problem with the Windows
network configuration. I would try rebooting the Win98 system, with the modem
still connected, to see if that clears it up.

I DID THAT NOTHING HAPPENS

now?? what should i do gary?

Eduardo:

When you run WINPCONFIG it defaults to the PPP adapter which is for a
dial up connection (56K modem). Since you are trying to connect to
your DSL Modem/Router you need to select your ethernet connection.
When you start WINIPCONFIG use the arrow next to the window that shows
"PPP Adapter" to choose your ethernet adapter from the drop down list.
The readings will change to reflect the new selection.

To be honest, I don't know for sure. I'm not really a networking expert.
Personally, at this point I'd try rebuilding the network installation on
your machine. Go to Network applet, remove everything, then go to Device
Manager, delete the NIC, and in the Properties of your dial-up modem,
Disable in this Profile (not the exact terms, but I don't have a 98 machine
in front of me.) Reboot and then reinstall the NIC and let Windows rebuild
the networking.

Question: Do you know anyone with Windows XP on a laptop? If you could set
this all up using an XP machine (and thus a system that ATT supports), you
could set up the DSL and then once that's successfully done you will be able
to connect the 98 computer.
