Error message in Windows 98 Second Edition

I am unable to run Windows 98 SE in normal mode. Fortunately, I can run it
in safe mode. When I try to run Windows 98 SE in normal mode then I receive
a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death --- grin). The windows fatal exception is as
follows:

Fatal exception 0D occurred at 0147:0000BC9D

I have a dual-boot with XP Professional which still works great. However, I
also want 98SE to work great as well. Thanks for your help and I look
forward to getting 98SE up and running at full speed.

Well PCR, you were right that eventually XP Pro. would hurt 98SE I guess --
grin. Thanks in advance for all of the help and I am looking forward to
posting here again via Mozilla Thunderbird on the 98SE side of my computer.

This happens during boot, I suppose? You can use the W98 bootmenu to create
a bootlog file, and then use 'Bootlog Analyzer'
<http://www.woundedmoon.org/win32/bootloganalyzer123.html> to find which
driver/software causes the crash.

Thank you. I downloaded and used the software. I analyzed the failures and
it seems like a bunch of fonts failed to load for some reason. I did not see
anything else. Is the solution to remove all the problem fonts or is the
problem deeper than that. Fortunately, the system still boots 98SE in safe
mode and it is nice to be able to use XP Pro. for the Internet while the 98SE
system is partially down.

The main font Windows needs for full boot is MARLETT.TTF.
So it is worth using SFC (System File Checker) to see
whether this one file has been damaged. SFC will on
command reinstal it from your Win98 CD.

No...do not remove the fonts...Since a lot of the fonts are not
loading...(and I've seen that before) the problem
is not typically corrupted fonts...but a problem elsewhere...
such as a corrupted video driver etc

Philo, do you suggest reinstalling the video and then sound card drivers or
do I need to try something else.

It says to replace APIX.vxd. That shouldn't hurt, because it's as old as

It says... "CAUSE: This error message can occur if you are using Adobe
Type Manager with certain video adapter drivers and the Hardware
Acceleration setting is not set to Full."

That couldn't hurt, either. Perhaps even try the reverse, & turn
Hardware Acceleration off, especially if you are not using ATM. If it
works to turn off Hardware Acceleration, then the video drivers indeed
are suspect, as Philo says. So, overinstall them. I have a larger post
for that, if you want.

Okay, the video drivers are fine. There may be an issue with the sound card
drivers. It is a Sound Blaster Audigy. After, I uninstall and reinstall the
sound card drivers then I can eliminate that. Then, I will proceed to go
through PCR's suggestions. Thanks everyone for the advice so far.

Okay, I am posting this in 98SE! Hooray! I reinstalled the sound drivers.
However, when I try and reinstall the Ati graphics driver, I get a remote
call error when I try and install the Ati Graphics Driver. I am trying to
install the Ati driver for 98SE for the Ati 9800 XT and currently am just
using a basic VGA display for 98SE.

Go to the ATI website. Go to the Customer Care and then Radeon to get
started.

If you are trying to install the Catylst Control Center, you need to have
NET installed.
Also there is advice on how to totally uninstall the old drivers before
installing the new ones.

came up with a site for the graphics drivers & sounds like his is the
voice of experience on it. I would go there! Nevertheless...

Troubleshooting Video Problems in Windows

"START, Run, MSConfig, Advanced button". If checked, then uncheck "VGA
640x480x16", & reboot.

"Control Panel, Display, Settings tab". Select as you wish from the
Colors dropdown menu & the Size slider.

If you move the Screen Area slider to 1024x768 there, possibly click the
Advanced button, & select Large fonts too— or there is a chance you end
up with tiny, unreadable fonts!

Try to get your colors/size at least twice that way. If it continues to
fail, you may need to reinstall your Monitor or Display Adapter...

For the Monitor...
(1) Boot to Safe Mode
(Hold F5 as you boot or CTRL for the Startup Menu)
(2) "START, Settings, Control Panel, System, Device Manager tab"
(3) Open the Monitors branch, & Remove all entries.

Perhaps, FIRST, even in Normal Mode, note what is installed
similar to below for the Adapter. That is...
(a) D-Clk the monitor there for Properties, Driver tab.
(b) Click the Update Driver button, then "Next".
(c) Bolt "Display a list...", & click "Next".
(d) Bolt "Show all hardware".
Examine the two panes to see what is currently installed.
That is likely what you wish to end up with, after step (4).

(4) Boot to Normal Mode.

Hopefully, it will be rediscovered & installed. Then, if still
necessary, here is the rigmarole of the Display Adapter...

your video card. This may or may not be the adapter that you are
using now. Examine the materials you received with your computer to
see if they include a CD-ROM or floppy disk that contains the correct
video adapter. Or go to the Gateway website and see if they have an
adapter for you to download. Or check the website of the company that
made your video card.

Thanks PCR! I also just ordered a replacement Ati Radeon 9800 XT cd from ATI
that has both XP drivers and 98 drivers on it. I get a remote call out error
when I try to install the latest Ati 9800 XT from the downloaded driver and
control console that comes with the driver. Let me know if you have any more
suggestions as I wade through these ones.

I can only guess the installation is trying to dial out or connect to
some WEB site. Are you online when you try to install it? I was hoping
that site Buffalo posted would solve it. You may need to allow Cookies
for the site to work-- I'm getting fairly empty pages without it!

I was mistaken about having to have NET Framework installed in Win98Se.
You only need it with Win2000 and later when you install ATI's Catalyst
Control Center.
You can install only the drivers without CCC in any system and therefore NET
is not necessary.
I don't believe that the Catalyst Control Center will install in Win98Se,
but not really sure.
Make sure you read on how to uninstall the ATI drivers completely.
If you are also installing those drivers for WinXP, be sure and get the XP
drivers.
I have downloaded drivers from ATI with no problem and they installed fine.
Having the drivers on a CD may help, but they get outdated fairly soon.
If you have the exact error message, I believe you can probably look it up
on the ATI site.
PS: Make sure you monitor is being properly recognized. If not, install the
drivers (.ini file) for it.

About the only thing I could find with a "Remote Procedure Call Error" was
to NOT install the WDM drivers.

Okay, I am trying to fix everything now just in case anything from the XP
side corrupted the 98 side. Although, the XP side is on D: and the 98SE is
on C: there still may have been something that slipped from D: to C: because
of user (my error). I have uninstalled Sound Blaster Audigy from both XP
side and 98SE side. Also, I have unistalled Ati Radeon 9800XT from both XP
side and 98SE side. I have checked extensively for viruses, spyware, adware,
etc. and only turned up 3 tracking cookies. When I try and reinstall the
Sound Blaster Audigy it works but it gives me one error message and I am
clueless as to what this might mean and what to do about it. Well I just
Googled it and it told me it was related to Windows Media Player which I
have. I have Windows Media Player 9 on the 98SE side. Should I unistall
that too? Thanks for the help and patience everyone.

Well, I tried replying with 98SE and it said it went through but I see
nothing posted here about it yet. I removed Sound Blaster Audigy and Radeon
9800 XT from 98SE and XP Pro. I have removed Zone Alarm from 98SE since I
don't need it since I have a hardware firewall. I posted the error message
and it had to do with Windows Media Player 9. I posted the error message in
full and perhaps
the filter thought it was spam. Anyway, I can post the error message again
later
when installing the Sound Blaster Audigy on 98SE if it will help.

You still should use a software firewall.
