Ah Dan, backup, you apparently haven't been here for awhile... there is a
good bit of history... Google if you want to catch up..

Okay, I will do that when I get a chance. My goal is to get 98SE stable
again first. I realize now that my big mistake was when I installed 2
gigabytes of ram to not right away go back to 512 mb's and limit 98SE with
msconfig to see only 512 mb's.

| Thanks PCR! I will try to reinstall IE6 and also try to extract and
| replace MSVCRT.DLL as you suggest.

You are welcome. Here is what I post for an over-install of IE, which
hopefully would give you a fresh & (nearly?) up-to-date MSVCRT.DLL...

Over-install IE. Try first without, but I believe it will request an
internet connection. Perhaps it is best to let it connect, actually. If
you don't care to get this fancy, just skip to step (c).

(a) Turn off interfering programs. Use http://www.pcmag.com/ 's
"StartupCop" or "EndItAll2". Or "START, Run, MSConfig, Startup tab".
Note what is unchecked, if anything. Then, go to the General tab &
disable the entire Startup Group, by clicking "Selective.." & unchecking
"Load Startup...". Reboot.

(b) Perhaps, if you haven't got EndItAll2, then "Ctrl-Alt-Del" & end
task all but Explorer & Systray. If this goes badly, start again from
top, & skip it next time.

(c) "START, Find, F/F, IE6Setup.exe". Click it in the Find window.

NOTE: If you are IE5, then it's "IE5Setup.exe". If there are more
than one (I have two each), click the one in "C:\WINDOWS\Windows
Update Setup Files" or "C:\Windows Update Setup Files", as applicable.

(d) Re-enable the Startup Group. That will automatically check all
items. Go to the Startup tab & uncheck any noted in step (a). Reboot.

(e) Perhaps go to Windows Update, to see whether it now offers
criticals.

And don't forget to add the MaxFileCache=512000 line under the [vcache]
header in System.ini. (you can also use 524288 instead of 512000)
That line should be added in Win98 anyttime you have more than 512MB of
memory (ram) installed in Win98.
If you install over 1GB , than you may have to limit your ram as you stated
above.
I use 1GB in Win98SE and it works just fine with the System.ini modification
alone.

MEB, pay attention.

There are 2 aspects of firewall functionality.

1) Inbound handling of unsolicited data packets
2) Outbound handling of packets from unauthorized or unrecognized
local processes.

I will refer to these items as #1 and #2 repeatedly below.

A NAT-router handles #1 IN ALL CASES, be they TCP or UDP. And it
handles this for all computers connected to it on the local LAN. It
is very efficient at doing this, and it does it in a secure manner.

A NAT-router does not perform #2 because it can't.

A software firewall performs both 1 and 2, but only on ONE computer.
If you have more than one computer on a local lan, you already have
NAT, so you are already protected for #1.

Function #1 is a bona-fide protection mechanism that prevents some
systems from being comprimized (this almost never applies to
windows-98 anyways, but it applied almost 100% to Windows 2K, XP-gold
and XP-SP1). Function #1 ->IS<- protection.

Function #2 IS NOT protection. Function #2 is an alert mechanism.
Unless it's a false alarm, #2 tells you that YOUR SYSTEM IS ALREADY
COMPRIMIZED IN SOME WAY. Function #2 is also a pain in the ass to
configure and live with. Because function #2 is only provided by a
software firewall, it can be deactivated by malware or by inadverdant
misconfiguration by the user.

In real life, there are always unwanted / unsolicited packets
hammering away at your internet connection (item #1) so it's a given
that they are more of a threat and should be delt with - moreseo than
dealing with #2.

It is MORE important to deal with #1 vs #2 - do you agree with that
MEB?

So how does this affect the average joe internet user?

If you were to prioritize the various security appliances, software
and settings you could obtain to insure a safe computing experience,
the first item on the list is a NAT-router. Even if you have only 1
computer and you don't need the ability to have a local LAN, a
nat-router will perform your internet log-in for you and will maintain
your internet connection even when your computer is off. This means
you don't need to run buggy or troublesome ISP login software, and
your IP address will remain fixed for longer periods of time (some may
find this useful if you like to operate a web-cam or use PC-Telephone
to communicate with friends and family).

Once you have a NAT-router, you have item #1 covered. Since I place
item #2 far down the list of important functions, I have other items
next (like a hosts file, locking down browsers with spybot and spyware
blaster, updating JAVA JRE engine, etc). At the bottom I place
anti-virus software (it is close to becoming useless these days) and a
software firewall (or more specificaly, item #2) at the very bottom (I
don't run one, I never have and never will).

(I have direct experience with running 10+ win-98 machines directly
facing the internet continuously from 1998 to Dec 2005 ->without NAT
and without any sort of firewall<- so I am well aware of what win-98
is, and more importantly what it is not vulnerable to.)

> Moreover, he also thinks the Microsoft's XP firewall will
> provide some sort of protection, should he need it.

The software firewall built into XP is ONLY an incoming firewall. It
performs function #1 only. Assuming it works correctly at all times,
it is exactly equivalent to what a NAT-router does. But because it is
a process running on the local machine, it is vulnerable to being
tampered with or being deactivated by malware, and for that reason it
is inferior to a NAT-router.

> We can likely rate this *routers are all you need while using
> the Internet*, right up there with advising people to disable
> their email protection provided by their Anti-virus programs:
> that's *pure crap* and carrying the smell that goes with that.

A NAT-router is THE FIRST THING YOU NEED. As I have always said, what
you get next are various reinforcements to your system as I mentioned
above. A software firewall is not even on my list because it has a
negative cost/benefit analysis.

Dan

Thanks PCR!!! I have a total of 3 MSVCRT.DLL --- they are as follows:

1. ver. 6.10.8637.0 ---- located in c:\windows\system
2. ver. 6.10.8637.0 ---- located in c:\windows\temp\crfo\drivers\addon
3. ver. 6.00.8397.0 ---- located in c:\program
files\creative\sbaudigy\playcenter2

I will proceed to try and reinstall Internet Explorer 6 ---- hopefully that
will work. Let me know if I should delete all of these and just replace the
top one with the dll from the 98SE cd or something else. Thanks again!

<bottom test reply> Dan here and testing from Windows 98SE machine
using Mozilla Thunderbird newsreader. PCR, you were so right. I went
ahead and reinstalled Internet Explorer and that really helped a lot. I
am still waiting for the ati cd to come in the mail but I am no longer
getting blue screens of death. I will begin to recheck things in
msconfig startup tab and let you know how things progress.

Oh, in case you missed it, and I see you apparently have little ability to
comprehend much: in your last/present hard drive discussion you discredited
ALL your prior posts... you proofed your own inability and mental
incapability to the world ... might want to try to at least recover a small
bit of integrity, though I seriously doubt you will be able too, being who
you are...

<snip>

Okay, PCR and others the situation is now this that I can boot into
normal mode in 98SE without Jet Detection: c:\program
files\creative\sbaudigy\program\adgjdet.exe, scanregistry:
c:\windows\scanregw.exe /autorun, ctstartup: c:\program
files\creative\splash screen\ctaxspl.exe /run, disc detector: c:\program
files\creative\sharedll\ctnotify.exe, windvdpatch: cthelper.exe, 1 of
the load power profiles, and atipoll: ati2evxx.exe

The load power profiles are both as follows: rundll32.exe
powrprof.dll,LoadCurrentPwrScheme

Thanks again everyone for all of your help and let me know what to do
next. PCR, I followed your suggestion about reinstalling ie6 and it
really helped. I am still waiting for the ati replacement graphics dvd
and I also would like to get a sound blaster audigy cd with dos drivers
but Creative no longer offers the sound blaster auidigy cd with dos
drivers and the replacement that I got in the past did not have dos drivers.

PCR, this is a test post from XP Pro. to let you know that Dan W. is the same
as me. I plan to bottom post compared to top post via Thunderbird in 98SE
when it is up and running fully again so don't get confused. <grin>

| Thanks PCR!!! I have a total of 3 MSVCRT.DLL --- they are as follows:
|
| 1. ver. 6.10.8637.0 ---- located in c:\windows\system
| 2. ver. 6.10.8637.0 ---- located in c:\windows\temp\crfo\drivers\addon

I'm guessing, when you installed "crfo", it replaced your v.8397 with
v.8637. It did so by putting v.8637 into C:\Windows\System. Do you know
what "crfo" is? Does it have a folder with its main executable in it?

If so, maybe move v.8637 into that folder, & move v.8397 back into
"C:\Windows\System". Then, only "crfo" will use v.8637.

But, if no such "crfo" folder is identifiable-- still move v.8397 into
C:\Windows\System, to see whether it cures the other apps-- & hopefully
"crfo" copes with it too.

| 3. ver. 6.00.8397.0 ---- located in c:\program
| files\creative\sbaudigy\playcenter2

V.8397 is also the one that is in the IE .cab files.

| I will proceed to try and reinstall Internet Explorer 6 ----
| hopefully that will work. Let me know if I should delete all of
| these and just replace the top one with the dll from the 98SE cd or
| something else. Thanks again!

You are welcome. I'm not sure, but... an over-install of IE might not
work, because it has a lesser version of MSVCRT.DLL compared to the one
in C:\Windows\System. An IE over-install may well refuse to replace
files of a higher version.

| ahead and reinstalled Internet Explorer and that really helped a lot.
| I am still waiting for the ati cd to come in the mail but I am no
| longer getting blue screens of death. I will begin to recheck things
| in msconfig startup tab and let you know how things progress.

Glad to hear it! Keep us informed.

Perhaps 'crfo' is the boogeyman , virus, or spyware. :)

| get confused. <grin>

| Okay, PCR and others the situation is now this that I can boot into
| normal mode in 98SE without Jet Detection: c:\program
| files\creative\sbaudigy\program\adgjdet.exe, scanregistry:
| c:\windows\scanregw.exe /autorun, ctstartup: c:\program
| files\creative\splash screen\ctaxspl.exe /run, disc detector:
| c:\program files\creative\sharedll\ctnotify.exe, windvdpatch:
| cthelper.exe, 1 of
| the load power profiles, and atipoll: ati2evxx.exe
|
| The load power profiles are both as follows: rundll32.exe
| powrprof.dll,LoadCurrentPwrScheme

The LoadPowerProfile's are fine. So is Scanregistry. As there aren't may
others, activate them one at a time, until the problem resurfaces. The
last one activated is the bad guy, then!

| Thanks again everyone for all of your help and let me know what to do
| next. PCR, I followed your suggestion about reinstalling ie6 and it
| really helped. I am still waiting for the ati replacement graphics
| dvd
| and I also would like to get a sound blaster audigy cd with dos
| drivers
| but Creative no longer offers the sound blaster auidigy cd with dos
| drivers and the replacement that I got in the past did not have dos
| drivers.
