Years ago I was actually president of Riverwest Artist's Association:

It was the type of organization where they just came up to me one day
and said: Ok, Philo, your turn to be president for a while. <G>

Then they voted and I was elected. After a year or so,
they came up to me and said, "Now Jill wants to be president...OK?"

"Sure", I said. The election results were that Jill became president next!

In other words a friendly and laid back system.
I am no longer active...but I am a life-time member.

Anyway...
since they did not have a website and I was already paying my ISP for the
service...
Their website was originally with my ISP until they came up
with a more permanent solution.

So when I took it over I simply published my own photos and poetry
until Colleen basically took it over as she is an artist by profession
and I am only one by accident.

So indeed, the woman you see there is Colleen
and the artwork is all hers. But she has allowed me to display at least
a few of my photo's as well.

I used to use either a 35mm or medium format camera...B&W mostly.
And for one special occasion I had created a collotype by constructing a
large format camera
from parts of several old enlargers. (The lens was a 99cent magnifying
glass.)

But now I use a digital camera and have gone color...
but not totally.

Not sure, but it's pretty close to B&W. I did an electronic solarization on
my Linux machine
using GIMP. It was very easy to do actually. I am no wizard when it comes to
photo-manipulation
nor do I ever wish to be.

So I am pretty fortunate that I met Colleen back in 1994 at one of those
poetry readings.
Heck I was an old man back then and don't know what she saw in me...other
than the fact
that I am a terrible imp! She must have liked that.


So if you somehow thought that philo was some "hot chick"...
I just looked in the mirror again and all I saw was some old, bald guy who
just about cracked the mirror!
I need a new mirror for sure...the one I have must be defective.

I must say I consider Photoshop and the millions of useless
filters for it one of the worst things contributing to the
ugliness of (primarily) the www, but in the case of this
picture, the solarization works very well. You could convert it
to grayscale and it would probably look even better (if I may be
permitted some c.c.).

Color works very well for some pictures (your 'smokers" photo is
an example IMO), but b&w is great. When I was young I was quite
into b&w photography and did all my own developing and printing.

(I was SO happy to read someone yesterday say they don't use
Photoshop because of its "antiquated" design. [Not that there's
anything wrong with antiquated, but I sure hope they updated the
80's-style icons from the last time I saw the program!] I
personally don't use PS because the last time I did and clicked
on "undo", the stupid program obediently went to the pervious
zoom view. That was the end for me. Micrografx had multiple
undo, editable command list and layers WAY before PS. [RIP.])

I have DL'd GIMP but while beautiful, it's overkill for me. I am
very happy with Micrografx Picture Publisher ver 7 (May 1997). I
tried ver 10 but it was too much. WHY does everybody keep on
doing this? I keep 10 around in case I EVER have to use a newer
PS plug-in (some of the new ones won't work in the old PP) -
hasn't happened yet, I am not into filters much.

Well I like to keep stuff simple. Photoshop has more features than I'd ever
use.

I still do have my darkroom, but I have not used it in many years.
As to that "smokers" photo. I used to say the same thing you did...
that it looked so fun, I almost wanted to start smoking. I am sure glad
that's one bad habit I never developed!

I usually don't bother with GIMP either...
usually IRFanView soes the trick. Though it's free, I liked it so much

She is the only woman I've ever met that I can get along with...
but even we had some problems.
We broke up for 18 months and we both never expected to get back together.
In that whole time...we only talked once and it was just briefly.

When people see us together, they think we are a cute couple...
they usually say we have an obviously great relationship.

At that point I reply "Yep, we've known each other for 14 years
and other than that one time where we did not talk to each other for 18
months...
it's been close to perfect!"


That usually shuts them up...but with an odd grin of confusion.

No. I am not at all a typical man.
When I go out of the army my girlfriend and I lived in an apartment
and I was the only male who lived there. There were two other women
in addition to my GF at the time.
All the guys in the neighborhood must have thought that I was quite a stud
to have 3 women living with me. Little did they know that nothing was going
on.

One day...they were all in the living room tearing in to what great a-holes
all men are...
and even though I was right there...they kept up their banter. At first I
was pissed
and almost spoke up...until I realized the had given me the *ultimate*
compliment...
for I was just "one of the girls" .

Maybe. But it will never be perfect. At least Hillary is a New Yorker.

It's pretty nasty. Bloomberg at least is keeping up the $400.00 rebate,
but my property taxes rose far higher than that over the last 10/so
years! Far higher! Also, (according to the N.Y. Post) he's maintaining a
7% lower tax rate over the next year-- but somehow I've been unaware it
ever existed! I'm pretty sure mine is at 15% or such & always has been!
Finally, the assessment of property value did fall, though. Can the
horrible yearly increases in that finally be over?

Hard drive diagnostics aren't an all night affair! Well, not the
manufacturer's versions. I guess Scandisk can go that long, yea. But

during a RAM check, if you want to run it that long, though. OK, fine.

They are building so many condos here...
and it has caused my property value to skyrocket.
Were I selling my house, sure that would be good...
but since I am staying here...it makes the taxes so high.

However...they have now over-built condos...
so though my taxes may not go down...
they are at least going to level off for a while.

We go there every year...
and always stay at the Chelsea Hotel...
I could honestly go to Manhattan for a week
and be perfectly amused by simply sitting in the lobby of that place.
observing and talking to all the people!!!


But we really love it because we walk miles and miles each day...
so can eat all we want and actually come home having lost a few pounds.


Each year we generally plan one night for entertainment.

Once..we went to see Woody Allen and his combo at the Carlyle

Last year we went to see Les Paul at the Iridium...
we were shocked when my aunt and uncle from San Francisco walked in and sat
near us!!!
She works for Arnold Schwarzenegger now, she used to be president of the
city console of SF or something like that?
We decided not to talk politics.

This year we plan to see John Pizzarelli.

We even tossed around the idea of moving there...
knowing full well we could not even afford to live in a cardboard box...
but it was nice to pretend that we rejected the idea for other reasons!

Then of course China town!!!!

Heck, we can have lunch there for less money than it costs here in
our modest little hovel.

No , the HD diagnostic does not need to run all night. I just do that last
thing in the evening.
It will be long completed by morning.
The RAM test will run indefinitely...
but if no problems are found overnight...the RAM can be declared OK
(most problems are picked up within ten minutes though)

BTW: If the RAM or HD fails the test...
you may safely assume it to be bad...but the converse is not true.
I have seen both RAM and HD's pass...but in actuality they were still bad!

I may have already said it, but I regret not smoking when I was
young - it's a good icebreaker. There's no point now. The
strange thing is, I /can/ smoke a cigarette and inhale and not

Good for you. I dislike the interface (well, last I looked was
about 8 years ago) and have many other graphics programs anyway
but IV is a godsend for most people.

If you excuse the expression, "been there, done that". But that
was a LONG time ago. I am afraid the vicious treatment I have
received from most women all my life has finally turned me into
