Most of the groups you use you can only get via your ISP or web-based Usenet
interfaces. (Or, I may be wrong and there are free Usenet servers out there.
Dunno.) But for MS newsgroups, just set up a new news account using
msnews.microsoft.com for the server name. Otherwise, it's anonymous logon,
so no username/password, just your alias and a fake email address.

When you leave the NG, it will prompt you to keep subscribed. Follow the
instructions. This is an anonymous server, so there is no username/password
logon, and you already know about using a fake email address.

That is a Registry restore-- ScanReg /Restore. I see you found your
instructions. A Registry restore can sometimes do amazing things, but it
doesn't include restoring or removing many files. If it was a Registry,
Win.ini or System.ini SETTING that was the problem, then a Registry
restore does fix it when you go back to a Registry that doesn't have the
setting.

In the case of avast!, I see most of it will execute at start by virtue
of being called from the Registry, but one part of it at least is
started from...

C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp

(Maybe it's just a certain option I've selected in avast! to put a
shortcut to AshAvast.exe there, BUT...) that would not get undone by a
Registry restore. You'd have to go & delete it yourself! Also, all of
the files of avast! would be left behind on your hard drive.

That is why a Registry restore is usually inappropriate to deal with
things, except in a dire emergency! But the statute of limitations is
past on that bad advice. So... kissing & making up is out of the
question! Maybe MEB & Terhune ought to do it over their colloquy gone
bad, though!

Open Outlook Express.
On the Menu bar click Tools > Accounts > News tab > Add button > News....
Type in a name, this name is what will show in the From column to others in the
ngs.
Click Next.
Type in an email address, fake (munged) is best, but be creative and try not to
use one that may be a real email address or they may get delivered to the person
with that address. When typing in a fake addy OE may complain, ignore the
complaint and continue.
Click Next.
Type in: msnews.microsoft.com
Click Next > Finish.

If the Newsgroup icon isn't on Toolbar, Right click the Toolbar.
Click "Customize" in the popup menu.
Press hold down the Left mouse button on the Newsgroups icon in the Left pane.
Drag the "Newsgroups" icon from the Left pane to Right pane and release the Left
mouse button. If you move up/down in the Right pane before releasing the
button, you can drop the icon in the position it will appear on the Toolbar.
Click Close.

Click the Newsgroup icon on the Toolbar.
In the text input box Display ngs that contain type: 98 or anything else in an
ng name. As you type, any ng name that contains what your typing will appear in
the lower pane. Select any ng you wish to subscribe to in the lower pane and
click the Subscribe button. When finished with your selections, click Ok.

In the Folders pane on the left, Right click an ng that is listed.
In the popup menu click "Synchronization settings". Click one of the selections
for synchronizing that you wish to use. I use All Messages while others use
Only New Messages, the choice is yours.

Now any time you open OE and click on one of the ng's listed in the folders
pane, the messages for that ng will be downloaded for your viewing. New posts
and posts with new response in them will be shown in bold while old posts
with/without responses that you have read will not be in bold. Whenever you
read a post/response they will toggle from being bold to not being bold. Any
post with response will show as bold if any response in the post has not been
read.

There are a few other things you'll want to do in configuring signatures,
rules, etc. but first set up the ngs and then you can get to the rest. Since
everyone sets there's up in their preferred way, you will/may get several
different suggestions on how to configure them.

I have been told by three sources now that data from Windows 98se can not be
transferred into Windows Vista. Is this true??
They say that 98 can be imported into XP and that XP can be imported into Vista. As I
am buying a new computer and it is important that I do not lose my data, what do I

I have been told by three sources now that data from Windows 98se can not be
transferred into Windows Vista. Is this true??
They say that 98 can be imported into XP and that XP can be imported into Vista. As I
am buying a new computer and it is important that I do not lose my data, what do I

Though I've already explained it to you, I'll do it here again for the
record: Those people are idiots. What they MEAN to say is that their quick
and simple programs that *supposedly* make these transfers easy aren't
written for transferring between 98 and Vista. That's true, but those
transfer programs don't work for most people most of the time, anyway. They
always miss something, and it's always that irreplaceable thing you REALLY
wanted to save, like the only remaining copy of your wedding photo, or
whatever. IOW, even if the idiots DID say it was possible, I wouldn't trust
them to do it. Look what happened with the last guy who tried to do that for
you.

It is CERTAINLY possible to get your personal files, OE messages, and most
other things transferred easily. Especially since you already have a
network. There might be a few things that need setting up anew (like email
accounts -- but maybe that's easy, too.)

Yes, you'll need someone who actually knows what they're doing to do it for
you, who actually knows more than you do, for instance, to guide you through
it or to do it for you, but you gotta stop listening to the idiot
salespeople and rumor-mongers in the Dell forums or what have you. They're
the LAST people to know anything. Go ask in the Vista forums (or XP forums)
and have a LOT of patience.
