That's just stupid.
Please, tell us you don't really think Apple _or_ the happy Mac users
agree with, support, or PAY Oxford for his abusive nonsense.

No specs or conditions? So you're making this claim about any machine,
and any software, under any usage?
You're a fool.

No disagreement. It's not equal, but Linux is definitely cheaper.

So you are one of those playing around with 'eye candy' instead of
doing work? It's almost certain you are saying that customizing a
computer is an important step.

> Search http://www.youtube.com for compiz and beryl and see what I mean!

Or, go to the development sites for those, and get accurate and useful
information. (Since when is YouTube a source of geek truth?)
Just don't expect either oen to tell you much about Linux, since they
are about two specific tools some people like.

Yes, we all know that. It's also been discussed, very very often.
It's just not significant.

Jeez, talk about astroturfing!
The two URLs above do not point to any 'previews' -- and neither did
the previous post or your post.
In fact, neither of you even mentioned a specific OS product at all!

So how is it you are both so impressed with them, and now considering
hardware?

Jeez, for all the mention of thousands of applications available under
Linux, you keep mentioning only these two -- and you use them to
promote the OS, which they are merely accessories to!

Hah hah. How can they sell out? As you said, you put Linux on common PC
hardware. (That hasn't sold out.) A since very few builders put Linux
on their machines, and they sell so badly, the reason they sell out
isn't because of high demand but of low demand and low build rate.

That's stupid. You're using an example of one against a broad
generalization to make a point?

Next you'll be claiming that all Apple laptops come with a stuck pixel,
and all Windows laptops always have perfect screens.
Please don't.

What are you trying to do Mitch, shut down COLA?
If those bozos had to support their claims, they wouldn't have any
advocates left.

But,,,, now that you bring it up, only about 5 Linux advocates are
left in COLA.
Compare that via Google to 2 years ago.
Where has everyone gone?

Doubtful.
I suspect they got tired of Roy Schestowitz and his SPAM machine.
Seems odd they all disappeared around the same time that Roy appeared.
Don't you think?

Most of them disappeared LONG before roy appeared.
Not that I can remember many of their names.
Only one ex-regular in this newsgroup springs to mind without digging.

Okay, let me make it clear to you:

If you do not refer to SPECIFIC VIDEO PREVIEWS, then you aren't talking
about any specific previews, right?
The cite above means you assume ANYTHING coming up from such a search
will show the amazing performance of a Linux box with _no specific OS_!

COLA has had problems with abuses, much worse than even CSMA.
It would be better if people just found other places to screw around.
But that doesn't reflect on the OS.

It is very clear that Linux has some MAJOR advantages in flexibility,
customizing, efficiency, and assortments of tools available. It's for
thinking-out-of-the-box people who tinker a lot. Or stability where
there isn't much tinkering or user access.
It doesn't seem to be for people who have a project they need to do
right away, or people who expect the system to always be ready to go.

Or perhaps it means "You assume the FIRST few coming up from such a search

A linux box with no specific OS?
Does not compute. Or did you mean something less... well... wrong...
Like no specific distro, or no specific desktop environment, or no specific
3d wowbang "look at this, puts vista to shame, eh?" add-on?

The wow factor in those videos is quite distinct from the wow of vista.
For one thing, MY computer could do most of the things in those videos.
My 4 or 5 year OLD computer with less than 1 gig of ram, a crappy MX400
video card and less than 1.5ghz under the hood.

The wow factor of vista is... "WOW!!!! Why does it need so much?!"

Your "apparently" says a lot.

COLA is a laughing stock. And you two helped make it so. The real
advocacy happens in the help groups. And the likes of Poaster, Harold
Stevens and others are even helping to muddy the waters there too with
their "what an idiot" and "me too" posts.

Don't believe me?

Willy Boasters last few contribution to the Ubuntu "HELP" group:

,----
| "I think my wife would have something to say about that! <grin>
| He's more likely peeved at being shown up for what he really is."
|
| "Quite so, but Quack adds 2+2 & gets 7, yet again showing his reading &
| comprehension disabilities. I know quite a few people who dual boot a linux
| distro & Win2k or XP, & I know people who use Forte Agent, X-News, &
| Xananews running under WINE too, but *they* don't troll newsgroups.
| Quack's getting desperate in *his* trolling."
|
| "Quite a few regard "Dan C" as a troll, & ignore him "
|
| "Yes, Quack will invariably take the M$ line. He will always argue M$'s
| corner against linux."
`----

There we have it. Ubuntu "help" at its finest.

As for Harold. Well, let's see:

,----
| "I don't care if wintards fsck their eyecandy standalone desktops. Just stay
| the hell off the net with their shoddy, overpriced bugware."
|
| "IMO, it's a classic variation of the "AllGeeksHateAllDumbAsses" troll.
| WHBT HTH YMMV..."
|
| "It's been my experience consistently, years now in Usenet tech groups. A
| couple of malcontents from advocacy lead an infestation, and voila: much
| more noise obscuring good tech advice signal."
`----

Yup. Linux help and advocacy at it's very best.

And you wonder why these people do more harm than good for the Linux
cause?

Yes, I meant a SPECIFIC DISTRO.
Unless you are going to argue that the distro package doesn't have any
effect on what the user sees, or is irrelevant to the examples of how
Linux works, then the distro is a critical factor.
We'd have to know which one before talking about anything like
appearance, organization, comprehensiveness, tools, or guidance for new
users.
And I'll expand my comment: video previews are nearly useless for
anything but showing a specific single tool. A potential user should
never be swayed by what is seen in a three-minute video clip,
especially when the source and reliability and plain honesty of that
clip is unknown!

Well, as long as the distro has a current version of X (probably the last
couple of versions would do too) then yes, any modern distro could do all
the things beryl/compiz/compiz fusion can do.

The only factor might be how difficult it is to get it working, most distros
released recently streamline it in quite nicely, but there are a few that'll
have to have it done manually.

The specific, single tool they're showing off is compiz, beryl or the fusion
of the two called compiz fusion. That's what they ARE showing off.
It IS a single tool.
