More evidence that MS copied OSX features in Vista.

I've been on COLA long enough to figure you out. Also, the bragging I
referred to occurred after I came up with the file for the fortune
program to display your nyms. Google it it happened.

If I was trying to troll, I would take your advice. You seam like the

I've been able to get Compiz Fusion to run nicely on an old dell with a
2.4 ghz P4 and a mid range video card circa 5 to 6 years ago

Did anyone actually read the PC World article details? "2.4-GHz Core
2 Duo T7700 processor, the maximum 4GB of RAM... $2949" If I spend $3K
on a system, it better be fast. I'm going to compare specs on these
systems to see if it was a true apples-to-apples test (no pun
intended).

The bottom line is - who cares? It's just hardware. I'm sure we'll see
a Dell/HP/Acer/etc in the next month that is faster. I've see a Dell
set to dual boot Vista and Mac OS, and both ran fine. Now that they
are all Intel based, you can do whatever you want.

As I suspected - the Mac and HP Pavilion HDX had faster processors and
4 GB or RAM, where the others only had 2 GB and lesser procs. Well
DUH! Of course the system with the faster proc and more RAM will be
faster. If you dropped 4GB and a 2.4-GHz Core 2 Duo T7700 in the Dell
or Acer, it'd be right up there with the Mac and HDX. Not a fair
comparison.

Let's also not forget that in most cases, the Mac was $500-1000 MORE
than the competing systems. Is that really worth the price tag? That
depends on the usage model. Most home computer users do one or more of
the following:
-Email
-Web surfing
-Word processing
-Downloading music/etc.
-Porn

Do I really need a $3000 machine to do those? Or will a sub-$1000
notebook work just fine for those activities? Sure, if I'm a hard-core
gamer or graphic designer, I want performance, but Grandma doesn't
care - she just wants to look at pictures of her grandkids. And there
are more Grandmas/casual users out there by far...

It was someone complaining about Macs that posted that not a Mac user,
but someone else.
You shouldn't have assumed it was a Mac user.

It shows, I would say.
You know, having a Mac does not exclude being stupid. Quite to the contrary.
The Mac advocates posting their drivel outside csma seem to have a combined
IQ still single digit

Well, obviously Mac users lack the smarts to reset crossposts.

Apart from the fact that this thread actually was started by the extremely
typical Mac user Oxford. You know, the typical Mac user with a sub-zero IQ

Actually, if you are using dialup you might not have an Ethernet
port and thus no MAC address... so it is possible to be on the
Internet and not have a MAC. )

I have Compiz-Fusion running on top of KDE on a 1,7 Ghz CPU, 384 MiB
PC100 RAM and legacy nvidia Geoforce 2 MX400 with 64 MiB VRAM.

If I want to play a resource hungry game like Alien Arena, however I
shut down Compiz-Fusion and fall back to Kwin (using the Compiz-Fusion
icon).

I guess on a similar machine With 512 MiB RAM and a more modern GPU
(Let's say with 128 Mib VRAM), it should work just fine.

Cheers

Crikey. No wonder so many of you have no idea about modern gaming if
thats the kind of HW you are using. 128 VRam would be a real bottom of
the line antique. Yup a quick glance at newegg:

http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=48&name=Video-Cards

Having said that, I must say that there really is need for the beast of
a machine I use for development with Linux. It really only gets half
used when playing full screen video on my TV as I work or when I boot to
XP to play an FPS or two.

Heheh. that's what I've got too... MX400. Slower CPU but more RAM though.

Maybe mine's a tad slower though, it's the PCI version. (This micro-atx
style mobo has no AGP slot)

Maybe some of us just don't give a snot about "modern gaming".
So what if doom³ runs like a tortoise. No great loss.
It does what I want for now. Though I might be upgrading the hardware soon,
it is getting rather creaky now, being about 4 or 5 years old.
