Duplicated Posts Showing in OE

P

PCR

Wait a minute! A reset & compact didn't cure it-- I STILL have
duplicates! However, now I am noticing they aren't precisely duplicated.
The first seems always to have this note at the bottom...

Posted via http://computerhelpforums.net Forum to USENET Gateway

So, I guess whoever uses that forum gets to have his post appear here
TWICE! Or are they, themselves, posting it twice-- once to there & once
to here -- & causing me & P.A. Bear to see double!!? MEB! What about
you...?...

| Why am I seeing over 300 duplicated posts in this NG!? It seems the

| The posts are identical, but their Properties are different. Here is
an

I'm beginning to discover each duplicated post has one difference-- the

What could it mean? As far as the time, actually OE shows them in its
display to be the same exact time-- it only looks different in the
Properties.

You have more than enough information to deduce whatever could possibly be
deduced from this end. Someone was doing something at
"http://computerhelpforums.net Forum to USENET Gateway" and screwed up.
Microsoft had nothing to do with it except if they want to clean it up,
which I suspect they won't.

Hmm, interesting, you may have found the potential answer.
Not *this* server reset, but another which caused this by reposting the
originals back to the group... didn't notice that,,

FIND provided these results:

199 messages - from 04-12-08 to 05-12-08 with the Posted via
http://computerhelpforums.net

Gee, seems an un-reputable [and likely illegal] way to make a server
*appear* to be the news posting portal of choice by most of the posters
here. Of course this will be reflected on ALL mirrors, so either this was an
honest mistake, or this group and Microsoft just got hacked.

Well, I don't see that any new ones came in today. Maybe they've fixed
it. I guess computerhelpforums was sending old posts to the MS server a
second time! The first is dated 4/12/08 12:22 AM by Bill of Co., & the
last is 5/10/08 4:14 AM by MEB. But those both came in yesterday to join
the duplicate already here! I'll hold back on any curse or spell on you
three/four MVPs until I see a new one. I think I owe you that much!

Yep. Looks like these are old posts coming in a 2nd time.

| FIND provided these results:
|
| 199 messages - from 04-12-08 to 05-12-08 with the Posted via

I see 202 that way, but it's also showing replies to posts that contain
that. Odd, I thought there were 100 more than that yesterday. I guess
the reset I did adjusted it somewhat.

| Gee, seems an un-reputable [and likely illegal] way to make a server

I don't mind them appending the advertisement-- if only they'll send it
just once! I notice this current post of yours does not contain it. So--
you sent this one here directly? Or can I expect the other to come in a
week or two?

What has apparently escaped many is:

This would be considered as a hack. Be it for advertising, increasing net
presence [and yes spiders search for this type of info as well] or other.
It would be interesting to see if this was done in the other forums as
well. That would potential increase the NET presence for this service by
thousands of users *supposedly* using the service. Think potential
revenue/advertising.

Only happened in this one, out of all the Win98 groups. Others who would
know and who have posted to this thread, who attend a lot more groups than I
do on this server and elsewhere, didn't mention anything...

Evidence is scanty. In any case, I'm sure the server managers are aware of
the issue and hard at work. Or not. Maybe the supposed hack has been dealt
with and they're just letting the messages age off the server.

Could be. Though one would certainly hope the server operators DID plug this
hole. There should be NO way to replace original messages, but only NEW
postings.

Would anyone have even noticed, XP gen and networking and Vista gen were
getting hundreds of posts when I was monitoring them. They could have easily
dismissed them as was done originally here.

This one made it. There was a previous one, too, that you posted Monday
evening, your time. Told us all about your replies disappearing, to which I
replied with a totally backwards understanding, for which I apologized, to
which Brian replied...

Yes I saw both copies. I intentionally sent it twice just to see if
the MS news server would baulk. The aioe.org news server (which went
off-line yesterday because the domain name registration expired)
doesn't allow duplicate posts and lets me know if I try to resend the
same post.

This is my 7th post to this thread. Neither of my two attempts at a
reply to Gary appear in my newsfeed. However, my newsreader seems to
think that the messages went through.

This is really weird. I still can't respond to the "PC not firing up"
thread, either.

There was also one reply to glee that didn't get through. Just in case
there was something peculiar about the content of my posts, I sent
them to alt.test. They all got through. <shrug>

Here they are:

Tried posting your messages myself, haven't gone through yet, so [though the
CERT did, which was posted afterwards] ...

Why did you try aioe.org, just as a test?

Did you attempt to use some other server/service, rather than
internode.on.net [which came through]?
