Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus-

That Belkin firewall needs to be in on the game. Plus, we're not sure what
other kinds of remains of other apps are left over on your machine that
might be getting in the way. Or rather, we know that there's the probability
of many such things. Pretty much as many as we can think of, <s>.

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus-

I have it installed and have the proxy settings set. Only had a problem with one
site, in that it had a lot of x's instead of pictures but
when I right clicked and said show picture (which is a pita) the picture came up!
Better than before we made all these changes. EBay is the place I would have expected
all the x's but it's fine. But I think what you are saying is don't try the test.

I remember there is a place on my Belkin setup site to put in proxy settings. Let me
know if I should do that. For now unless I have problems.....I will leave the web
shield on. Ginny

Gary S. Terhune wrote:
| OK, so Web Shield doesn't work on Win98 without the proxy. Didn't
| know that.

That appears to be so. Athough it appears to involve sites only -- the
stuff that begins "http:" & probably "https:" & possibly others -- there
could be multiples involved when clicking a single URL. I can see 4
http:'s flash by in pop-ups when I click that avast! URL I posted
earlier-- & the Scanned Count increased from 17 to 22!

TIFs STILL were scanned (seen in pop-ups) as they entered, even with Web
Shield paused. Scanned Count did not increased for them.

| Well, IMO, that ain't worth it.

Well, it DOES seem to improve virus detection at that Eicar site, as I
said. Checking again (& this is a bit different from first
remembered)...

With Web Shield PAUSED... none of the 8 clicked at Eicar sound an alarm.
The download box is offered instead, & the download is allowed. The
downloaded file has to be R-Clkd & scanned or clicked to run or open for
avast! to detect a virus.

With Web Shield RESUMED... the all 4 HTTP viruses get detected as soon
as they are clicked at the site. The download box is not offererd. All 4
HTTPS viruses behaved as with WS paused.

Now, I see (Web Shield on or off), the HTTPS eicar.com.txt file will
open when clicked. Even downloaded, it also will open when clicked. For
a virus to be detected-- it must be R-Clkd & explicitly scanned! SO...
avast! isn't perfect! (The HTTP text file will get detected when clicked
at the site-- usually! If it stops detecting that one, clear TIFs of all
things Eicar. Sheesh.)

For all of that, it didn't seem to matter whether On-Access Scan was set
to Normal or to High.

| It can just sit there and
| do nothing so long as it stays out of the way. What I don't get is
| that it causes Ginny problems, even with no firewall installed on
| Windows (just the Belkin router.) Unless maybe I've undone enough now
| that it WILL just sit there and do nothing. I can't get her to test
| it, <g>.

I see she's done a bit of testing but had a crash. I'll try to figure
it, if I can.

I wouldn't necessarily give up on the avast! proxy yet.

(a) Was it working until you set something in Belkin?
(b) Can you remember anything more about the fatal exception,
like did it mention any programs?
(c) Did you ever have one like that before setting avast!'s proxy?

To get a bit more diagnostic info about such crashes...

"START button, Run, DRWATSON"
now, D-Clk it's button in the Tray.

What diagnosis is on the first tab? Copy/paste it's contents,
using the menu. Close DrWatson, but leave it in the Tray. It sits
waiting for a crash, then traps it, putting info into the Diagnosis tab.

(a) "START button, Find, F/F, DrWatson.exe".
(Should be in "C:\Windows".)
(b) R-Clk it, point to "Send to" & click "Desktop (Create shortcut)".
(c) R-Clk the shortcut on the Desktop, & select "Cut".
(d) Open Explorer to "C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp"
(e) R-Clk in the R-Pane, & select "Paste".

Now, it will always boot to the Tray, waiting for a crash or a D-Clk.

Thanks or Good Luck,
There may be humor in this post, and,
Naturally, you will not sue,
Should things get worse after this,

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus-

IMO, considering the condition of the lady's machine at this time and the
imperative that she remain connected to the internet, and lastly that there
are still other more important tasks that need to be performed on the
machine ASAP, I'd leave well enough alone. Maybe come back to it later. The
Standard Shield is the important one. That, along with the passive
protections already in place and the system is sufficiently protected for
the moment.

if/when CdLSRN should request it after the current work is done. Sounds
like you did get a lot/lot done. Very good, then. OK, bye.

Well, (turn on DrWatson now, but) best finish up with Terhune in all
threads first, I think-- I'd rather he battle with MEB than me! He isn't
quite as mellow as he had once become anymore! After that, as I posted
elsewhere...

I wouldn't necessarily give up on the avast! proxy yet.

(a) Was it working until you set something in Belkin?
(b) Can you remember anything more about the fatal exception,
like did it mention any programs & what was the last thing
you clicked before it happened?

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus

I did not set anything in Belkin. Perhaps I should have gone to my site and entered
the Proxy settings for Avast.
I believe it was a fatal exception OD... but I didn't stay there long. I was afraid I
had lost my machine. Sorry. As you can see I ran Dr. Watson.and posted the
results......saved a copy to the desktop and closed it.
Yes I had fatal exceptions OD a few years ago (or more) caused me no end of
trouble. Either caused by McAfee or one of my other troublesome firewalls. CA was the
first trouble free firewall that I can remember. Sorry, don't remember the last
thing I clicked before the crash. I am going to set up Dr. Watson now . Then I will
set up the proxy and the web scanner. I will look for Brians links for windows 98 and
Avast Web Shield. Should I put the proxy settings in to Belkin? Ginny

Avast not working:: need antivirus

Perhaps it needs Quick Time to run. Ha Ha. When I tried to set up web shield or just
open Avast it gave me several different error messages. "Program cannot load
storage", The process cannot load, etc. Unless I hear from someone I will remove it
and try a reinstall. Could Dr. Watson have interfered with it? Ginny

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus

Don't takeout the KB!~ it is protection from a problem that came from the
very same region as Avast.

You only need to set the router with proxy rights iff you have a proxy
server in your LAN. This works like a proxyserver in that it is enabled the
same way. The shield should work for you if you just set it in your
msie>internet options>connection tab>enable proxyserver and label/address as
localhost and port:12080. You also must place in Trusted zone loopback
adapter as 127.0.0.1 and router iff you have a software FW like ZoneAlarm.
Else Do nothing. Try that setup and dr watson is not a bad idea if your
suffering crashes, but this should not crash you on windows.

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus

>Should I put the proxy settings in to Belkin? Ginny

NO on any router. Leave it blank like the default setting.

Only set the msie settings.

Only set software FW settings for Trusted zones if required by the soft FW.
ELSE DO nothing.

Try that setup.

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus

As Jim has said, absolutely the 2 "KB" entries are fine. I tend to think
the Adobe Type Manager entry can remain as well. But this one...

--------------------
<unknown> has altered Windows system files.
Module Name: <unknown>
--------------------

....needs to be investigated! It could be innocent, but anyway I wouldn't
want one there myself. (I dimly recall once I did have it, but it isn't
there now. Could be it came/went with some in/uninstall I did-- maybe
NetZero's NET-search thing?) Anyway, I'm looking at Google for some
ideas, but that is a difficult one to figure. In the meantime, maybe
post your Startup Group...

(a) "START button, Run, MSInfo32, Software Environment, Startup
Programs".
(b) Use the Edit menu to select all, copy, & then post it.

But, STILL, it may be a good idea to finish up with Terhune before
investigating this-- for my safety & yours! I think he's almost done
arguing with MEB!
