My computer was acting 'weird' -- unstable. And I was working to "fix" it -- cleaning disk, getting rid of extra software, etc. I also have an external hard drive. I was in Outlook and all of a sudden my Outlook got stuck and would not "unstick". I closed the computer, reopened and my pst files showed that they were "gone". So I went online and did a lot of research. I couldn't find the files, even though I'd unhidden everything UNTIL I did a search for them and they showed up as being there. But I couldn't get them to work with Outlook. So I called HP, where I have a service contract. We cleaned out the computer. Uninstalled MS office then reinstalled It. Unistalled ie 9.0, then reinstalled it. Removed Google Chrome but added Advant browser as i.e 9.0 doesn't allow me to delete or add newsletters from my newsletter program. The unstableness of my computer seems to have gone away from the work we did. But still the PST problem existed. I would open Outlook, it wanted 'x' files, from my external hard drive, and couldn't find them. Finally after searching for an answer I was able to create a new database in Outlook so that at least I can open it, use it and disable the files that it's trying to get that "aren't working'. Those files are on my external hard drive. I was able to unengage all files except one that it insisted it was using. That database, I am unable to to get into the emails BUT the system allowed me to send/receive mail using the files from it and I can send emails pretty easily since the old email addresses show up in the To/From area (they do not show up in the contact file) Also the sytem opens the reminders. Just NO Contact List and no access to emails. Someone, at the MS Forum told me to do a check disk. I did. My hard drive is AOK. My external hard drive, it found some files and saved them to a folder called FOUND. Still no easy access to the PST files.. in fact, now they're gone. They seem to be in the FOUND folder as CHD files. I see their size and they are my PST files, 2gb and 3gb each -- but I can't seem to open them. Thoughts? Advise? The kicker. When I brought all those old files to my new computer and external hard drive. I thought that I was accessing the files from my external hard drive (and it was) BUT I thought it was backing up the files on my new computer. It didn't do what I thought it was doing. So I'd really like to try to save those CHD files and turn them back into PST files. Thanks for reading this book of what's been going on. Maria Any thoughts on how to open them? I have scheduled for automatic windows updates every sunday. On sunday, when I am using it, Windows Automatic updates pops up which says Installation will begin in 15 mins. But after 15 mins nothing happens. Neither it installs the updates, when I click &quotInstall now&quot in the popup. Though I can install the updates manually in the PC settings. Please Help. My problem is occuring on a Dell Inspiron 1420 - running Windows Vista Version 6.0 with Service Pack 2 Installed. Windows Update keeps trying to install these same items: Security Update for Microsoft.Net Framework 4 (KB2604121, KB2656351, KB2729449, KB2737019, and KB2742595 as well as Updates for Microsoft.Net Framework 4 (KB2468871, KB2633523, and KB2600217). I ran the Microsoft Fix It Center - and received the indication that Windows Update components must be repaired (indicated it was fixed/done and succeeded) and that "Default Windows Update data locations have changed." The autofix did not repair the data storage issue noted. I ran the SFC check - and that indicated that there were some corrupt files - that could not be corrected. And, although there were other corrupted files, they were corrected when I ran the SFC check - with the following being unrepaired/uncorrected. We have three different live accounts. Just about every other day when checking for messages on all accounts we get a notice that one or the other of the three accounts is not accessible, then, of course, after a bit the account does miraculously become accessible again. Recently our organization applied a Microsoft security update part of which was KB2742596. We have both Windows XP SP3 as well as Windows 7 systems. After the update on Windows XP SP3 machines a custom application has stopped working. On start-up it simply crashes without any error message. I rebuilt the application with some exception handling and I get the following error message:COM Error Occured in - Source:&ltEMPTY&gt, Description:&ltEMPTY&gt, Error: 16387What could possibly cause this error? I also have to mention the same application if started from Visual Studio in Release mode with debugging enabled and Optimization disabled does not crash (standalone version does). I recently did a system upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8, all the drivers are properly updated and everything is working fine, but once i try to install the updates it doesn't work, i can select the updates i want, click install, and no matter how much time i leave the laptop on, it always shows "0 KB total, 0% completed" What do i do to be able to install the updates?My laptop is an HP Pavilion G6 and i'm using Windows 8 64-bits. I have a Dell Inspiron M5110 that came preinstalled with Windows 7 Home Premium. Like the title says, The welcome screen just stays on for hours with hard drive light solidly on. Not one flicker in the light whatsoever. I also have trouble booting into Safe Mode, kind of a hit or miss type of thing. Once it has booted into Safe Mode, Welcome screen stays stuck for hours. I (thankfully) have Ubuntu 12.10 Linux (64-bit) on the computer. I booted into Ubuntu 12.10 to check the hard drive status and bingo, it said in the SMART data that I had one bad sector, just one. I also had a Blue screen of death regarding a REGISTRY_ERROR yesterday. Computer Specs: Processor: AMD A8-3500M APU Quad Core 1.5GHz Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6620G System Chipset: AMD A70M RAM Memory: 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SODIMM Hard Drive: Western Digital Corporation 500GB (WDC WD5000BPVT-75HXZT3) WiFi: Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11 b/g/n I previously had the Stock Seagate 500GB HDD that came with the computer but it had to be replaced under warranty due to 1000 bad sectors and was failing according to SMART. I have, over the last two days recieved the message that my Windows 7 is not genuine, and an advert to purchase a new Windows Package at the cost of £79. However I bought my PC along with the Windows 7 from PC World in 2010 and have not had any previous problems. I have tried the Recovery process twice but it states that it cannot finish due to 'Error 00000022' I have also been onto Microsoft and done the 'Fix It' but nothing has cured it. I recently built a soundboard to be used in Skype, and I want to enable both stereo mix, and my external mic so that i may use my mic whilst able to use the soundboard to play clips during my podcast. My job requires me to work on a virtual machine installed on a 3.0 flash drive. I was previously working through a virtual machine that was installed on my hard drive and never had any issues with my mouse stop working. Now that we have changed over to the virtual machine on a flash drive, my mouse stops working once a day. I've changed the mouse out for a new one and that one stops working too.
