First of all I was getting bad pool caller error That stopped and the pc (lenovo ideapad z570 Windows 8 64 bit) then started to restart itself in the start-up sequence every time and come up with a 'I had to restart so I want to send Microsoft a message' strip across the middle of the screen every time Now it just doesn't start - goes to black screen - so I re-start it using the on/off button and it seems to be OK Please can you help? Many thanks View the full article

Suppose my computer is a WSUS client and I don't have the instalation disk for Windows 8 (seems stupid to me that you need the Windows 8 install disk or the iso just to install Net Framework offline, but nevertheless it's a feature). Of course when I try to add the Framework 3.5 from Add/Remove Features it gives an error 0x800F0906 when I click on Download files from Windows Update because it checks on WSUS for the package. Is there some other way? Don't bother to ask why I don't download the iso because I'm on a slow connection and even if I weren't such an offline install solution sounds veeeery stupid. Thank you in advance. RR IT Professional View the full article

Hi, when I start the Windows File Explorer it often needs a long time to being started. How can I find the reason for that? What's a good approach to search for the problem behind that behavior? View the full article

Hello all, In my 20 years as an IT Professional, I have never felt the need to comment/discuss/rage about an OS.....until Windows 8 came along. A bit of background- I am an IT Manager. I look after 80 users spread across 3 sites...all of which use a PC/Laptop of some sort. I am the only person in the IT dept. 4 days in and this is my conclusion of Windows 8 - I don't want Windows 8 for my users. I will be doing my utmost to try and obtain previous versions of Windows for my staff. Those versions can be Windows XP, Windows 7...or even Windows Vista. My main supplier is Dell, but my suspicion is that Dell will start touting Windows 8...and soon, previous versions of Windows will not be obtainable from Dell. At this point I will look for another supplier. Reasons - There's only one reason - The UI. My users are all busy people. They come to work, do their 8 hours and go home. Their PC/Laptop is a tool, nothing more, nothing less. Just like a tool, they want it to be simple, efficient and have a small instruction book. Windows 8 is such a detraction from all previous incarnations that for the average business user, it's unusable. Being in IT, I am of course pretty savvy with IT. I can work my way around most things IT....but Windows 8 had me confused for a good hour or two before I understood what was going on and what it was trying to do. Some of my users simply wouldn't cope. It would take them weeks to get to grips. They would be on the phone to me constantly. The only way I can get to some normality is to revert all the UI back to something that looks like Windows XP. So to this end, I get to the laughable. The Laughable I am only four days in and I have already had to download four 3rd party apps to overcome Windows 8's shortcomings - Classic Start Menu - I have my Start Button back.....hooray Hot Corners disable tool - The Hot Corners are simply annoying and offer no benefit in a work environment. I also believe the Hot Corners has created a bug for me, of which I speak about in another thread. Foxit PDF reader - The inbuilt metro PDF app is rubbish for two reasons - 1, I cant scale it to a Window and have it hovering 2, Only seems to work well with Hot Corners that I've now disabled. Royal TS - For some bizarre reason, I can no longer manage my four Hyper-V servers from Windows 8. The remote management tools simply don't work. Royal TS has given me this ability back. What I would like... ...is for Microsoft to acknowledge that they have business users...and that those business users don't care about the latest and greatest UI fad. Please, oh please give me a tick box that simply says "Make the UI look like XP". And allow me to tick it via GPO. I don't want Metro I don't want Aero (or whatever it's called in 8) I don't want Hot Corners I don't want Touch Screen View the full article

I had a call from a man supposedly representing Microsoft telling me that they had been receiving feedback reports from my pc that there was a Trojan virus. He asked me to open my pc and look for yellow warning signs. As my pc has been rather slow lately I did open the pc but stopped at the point where permission to access the management of my computer was requested. The bells started to ring at this point. He knew my name and address and telephone number so he sounded very convincing. I rang off at this point. My question is, can he have gained access to my pc or passwords etc. what action should I take to safeguard myself and is there someone monitoring this activity? Thanks View the thread

Hi All, Is there a way that I can arrange and pin program shortcuts to the start screen in such a way that every user that logs in the computer has the same format and arrangement? The thing here is we would like to remove those shortcuts not needed and replace them with the most used ones. We would like to deploy that setting to all users who logs in in the computer. So. Windows 8 running on an ASUS laptop. Apparent bug in Cisco software prevents Windows 8 connecting to WLAN (802.11W problem). So downgrade driver for WLAN card to W7 version, and PC will not boot. Goes into Automatic Repair which cannnot fix problem. Cannot boot in Safe Mode because it appears AR is getting there first. Had to System Restore just to replace the driver (and reinstall all the other software I've put on since the restore). This sucks....wasted 4 hours trying to find a solution. View the full article

I am running Windows 8 Pro x64 with the latest updates. Recently I've noticed that in task manager under the performance tab, the CPU section reports my speed at 3.50 GHz all of the time. I know for a fact that my CPU downclocks when under low load because my motherboard's software shows CPU frequencies and the temperatures of the components drop accordingly. Thus, I expected the speed in task manager to reflect this. However, my speed is at a constant 3.50 GHz even though downclocking and turbo clocking are working fine. Are there any diagnostics I can do to investigate this issue or is there not an issue? View the full article

I find this frustrating and disappointing. My laptop was running fine and when I tried to shut down, I got these loads updates last night which lasted about half an hour and deemed to be important. When it restart and what do I get, I get an error message "The user profile service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded" error and I cannot login. What is the matter with Microsoft? Why is Microsoft offering faulty or detrimental updates?" I have no time for all these and apparently, my profile has been deleted,, damaged or changed (after searching the internet for solutions). Why is Microsoft update meddling with my profile? I have not fixed the problem yet and suggestions of entering into safe mode to create a temp profile to access, change or copy my original profile to fix this problem, etc. is just not acceptable and how am I going to trust any future Microsoft updates? I need a simpler and better solution. View this thread

Windows 7 machine can access the folders in the windows 8 machine but not the other way around. I tried to ping windows 7 machine from windows 8 but the ping didn't work, but it works from windows 7 the firewall is turned off in both computers View the full article

There is nothing wrong w/ going from Desktop to the Start screen w/ its Tiles for some or all things OR going to WinQ for things OR pinning a bunch of stuff OR having icons all over the Desktop BUT, You might like this approach... It means not having to do any of the 3 things mentioned above. The Applications window sits on the Taskbar. Please note the use, employment of Desktop Toolbar, greatly facilitates ease of navigation & allows screen to be 'clean' of icons. <a href= Cheers, Drew [url=' alt='> Drew MS Partner / MS Beta Tester / Pres.
