  9. Who deleted the thread? Did anything I typed caused offense? What I was trying to say is that touch is not a virtue. It is a necessity to solve a particular evil, ie very small displays that were a compromise to achieve mobility on cellphones. When screens are very small, to see the content you want to see, there has to be continuous zooming in/out and panning. Touch is the best option for this right now. If you have used the joystick on the old Nokia E-71 you will understand me perfectly. Microsoft shouldn't be blindly chasing touch just because Steve jobs looked cool demonstrating it on stage. Touch, as I had illustrated earlier, is a drawback in most other situations, even on the cellphone. PCs (I mean mainly laptops as that appears to be the most popular PC form factor now) do not have the limitation of cellphone screens. Hence touch is very out of place. When Windows 8 is optimized for touch, it causes headaches for PC users. Eg touch requires an icon to be huge enough so that the chubby finger doesn't touch the wrong one, so in addition to size they must be spaced out, but with a mouse (touchpad on a notebook), the hotspot is exactly 1 pixel in size. It is two vastly different worlds. The design for touch does not just increase the size of a button. It affects the whole PC. So instead of a Start menu, you have a Start screen. On a 1920x1080 display, the Start screen is ten times slower than the Start menu simply because it has to render and move ten times as many pixels, most of which are useless to a mouse hotspot of 1x1pixel. 13. So does this device actually work well on Windows8? Win7 it was &quotusable&quot but not &quotmagic&quot. I hate mice, but they are super accurate pointing devices, the magic trackpad (when I breifly used one on a friends Mac) is the only trackpad type thing (that I've used on any laptop/desktop) that comes close to being usable as a total mouse replacement, but it would be nice if it did more than just the pointing, and that you could take advantage of the gestures without having to reach out and touch the screen (for example when you have your tablet Win8 machine docked). Asking because I can't find mention of this anywhere on the net and I don't want to fork out $80 to find its a rubbish experience on the Windows 8 machines. View the full article

  22. From William MWP I have tried to resolve a problem with Windows Update but, so far, without success and would appreciate some assistance. The relevant information is as follows:- Dell Laptop Studio 1745 computer. Windows7 Home Premium. Version 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601. Type X64 based PC. On the 12 October the McAfee security programme kept indicating that my computer was not protected and I was unable to recover it shortly afterwards the computer crashed irretrievably and had to be returned to Dell who installed a new motherboard. On return (17 October) it worked normally but I was still getting security messages that my computer was not protected . This problem was finally resolved on the 20 October after a remote access session with a McAfee technician. According to the reliability history monitor the system reached stabilty level 10 by the 7th November. On the 15th there were a number of updates that installed successfully but with the exception of KB2761226 which failed with error code 800b0100. It continued to fail daily to the 11th December. However, on the 28th November update KB2762895 installed successfully. On the 12th Dec it installed KB2779562, 2761465, 2753842, 2758857, 2770660 and Windows malicious software removal tool. It did not install KB 2779030 with error code 800b0100 I believe this replaced KB2761226 mentioned above. 2779030 has failed to install from 12th Dec. to date. However, on the 21st Dec. security update KB 2753842 installed successfully. Windows Update currently recommends 3 important updates KB 2779030, 2739159,and 2743555. These return error codes 800b0100, 80073712 and 800b0100 respectively. I have tried Microsoft Fixit and automatic trouble shooter without success, and, from answers on the Community Forum, System Update Readiness Tool and System File Checker. I cannot send all the detail from the CheckSUR Log or sfcdetails.txt but the following are extracts. CheckSUR: please note that KB2731847 was installed successfully on the 15th August 2012. It seems that it will install some updates but not specifically Security Updates for Windows 7 (x64) but apart from this problem the computer is working normally. I have not tried a clean boot as "services" indicate that the update service is started, Automatic (delayed) and BITS, started, manual.I should be grateful for any advice and whether it`s possible to repair the corrupted files (?) without having to re-install W7. 25. I have recently purchased an upgrade license for Windows 8, which I have installed over an existing and working windows 7 OS. Only recently I have come to realize that the HDD on which Win 8 runs is an old parallel ATA drive (as opposed to newer SATA drives in the system). Therefore, I am planning to purchase a new SATA drive and clone the old system drive on this latter one. Should I expect any trouble starting-up Windows 8, from a licensing standpoint or otherwise? Thank you View this thread
