| "Windows information web sites." Are you trying to say that
| http://www.w3counter.com/globalstats.php is somehow rigged? And how many
| sites REQUIRE IE such that you can't even get there to be counted using
| Linux?
Ah, that site is completely blocked in my HOSTS file, guess why.
Your base consists of those computers you know how to fix, that's not a
cut, just a statement.
AND you direct those parties move to what YOU recommend.
And no, the stats may not be wrong, but what do they reflect [can't tell
you as I have no intention of disabling the block]..
The intent of the computer age was to INCREASE the intelligence of the
world and to allow the people of the world to communicate with each other..
IN STARK constrast, we find what actually occurred was that people just
bitched and complained until they find an OS which they need no NOTHING
about to use, so they can pirate software and music, send emails, view nifty
Flash objects, steal DVD movies, watch TV programs on their computer, and
..... meanwhile, the intelligence level seems to have *fallen off the edge of
the world*...
|
| As I said, maybe when I get the time. But I don't see much in the way of
| application support out there, much less hardware support. And you keep
| ignoring my main point: All your whining about dumb devices and
Microsoft's
| stealing (let's not be coy, we both know they do it), and everything else
is
| meaningless to me. A world built upon innumerable Linux distros and
millions
| of independent programmers, and tons of tiny partnerships between
| programmers and hardware developers... I don't want any part of it. I
*want*
| mass marketed and standardized products, even if they're dumb and crappy.
As
| does most of the world. That's where the tilting at windmills part comes
in,
| and I don't mean just you, I mean the whole utopian Linux crowd. They are
| invaluable to society, but they will never come near ruling it except in
| some self-satisfied sense of accomplishment.
What application don't you find? What is it that you need to do that isn't
found in a Linux version or specific program?
SO you WANT to be forced every few years to buy a new computer and devices,
you WANT to be forced to upgrade when support is pulled, you WANT to have no
control on what your OS does, you WANT to ... well, the comment would
usually be "lead by the nose".
|
| Now, I grant you that Linux lends itself to specialization, which could be
| wonderful in large networks in large companies, and Linux is perhaps
making
| inroads there. But I'm betting it's just as slow going as in the
| personal/SOHO market. Then again, you say we have no stats for those.
Gary, what all Windows user forget, is that Windows displaced Unix, Linux,
Xnix, IBM DOS, and variants from the home and business world. Granted, home
usage during that time period was infantismal. The FIRST Windows was used
because it looked GRAPHICAL. Everything used within it for NET use came from
third parties. Microsoft limped into the picture with a rediculous
browser... and that's about it.
Here's somethiing, how many servers RUNNING the Internet use a Linux/Unix
or variant?
What is the number one server being used to put hacks into systems?
|
| Still, I don't see those Web stats changing very quickly, nor the pace of
| that change changing very quickly. And while you might quibble with them a
| bit, you can't go changing them by orders of magnitude just on a hunch or
| based upon magazines, blogs, etc. The potential of Linux is and always has
| been just that--potential. If you want to convince me that Linux has any
| near-term chance to save the world from XP, then let's have the numbers.
